Qualifications
PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO INDIGENOUS CANDIDATES. APPLICANTS MUST SELF-DECLARE ON THEIR COVER LETTER OR RESUME AS INDIGENOUS (FIRST NATIONS, MÉTIS, AND/OR INUIT).
MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- University Bachelor's degree is required (preferably in social sciences or a helping profession.)
EXPERIENCE:
- Two years of directly related administrative experience required.
- Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous peoples is required.
- Knowledge of holistic approach, adult education principles, and Indigenous learning styles required.
- Must be knowledgeable about Indigenous cultures, values and have working knowledge of cross-cultural issues faced by Indigenous Students.
- Advising/counselling experience is an asset.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Highly developed interpersonal competencies and group process skills are essential.
- Problem solving and conflict resolution skills are required.
- Must be able to work in an environment that requires enthusiasm, self-motivation and flexibility.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal required.
- Must be able to set priorities, meet deadlines, and arrange own workload.
- Must be proficient with Microsoft Office and using intermediate features associated with a Windows computer environment.
- Must have a genuine interest in helping students and the ability to work patiently with students.
- Strong work ethic and be willing to take initiative to solve problems and learn new tasks.
- Possess a positive attitude and the ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with faculty, support staff, students, and individuals external to the university required.
- Ability to maintain privacy and confidentiality with respect to all communications and records is required.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
OTHER JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of University of Manitoba polices pertaining to students preferred.
Key responsibilities
- Setup initial assessment meetings with all new students.
- Contact students in home communities to assess individual student needs prior to students relocating.
- Provide students with referrals such as appropriate housing, childcare services, financial and other services as required.
- Assist students and their families with the transition of relocating.
- Provide students with information and guidance regarding basic individual, couple / relationship and family issues.
- Refer students and families to appropriate therapeutic services or other resources as required.
- Following-up with students and / or families to ensure services are being provided.
- Meet regularly with all students on an individual basis.
- Handles confidential & sensitive information in a professional manner.
- Provide one on one counselling or group workshops in time-management, problem solving, study skills and stress management techniques as required.
- Through employment enhancement workshops or on an individual basis, assist students with employment preparation such as developing resumes, cover letters, and providing job strategies and conducting mock interviews.
- Liaise with industry representatives and schedule informational group lunches between students and industry representatives.
- Developing and teaching personal development workshops during orientation.
- Participate in community orientated committees as required.
- Promote cultural learning for Indigenous students and the wider community by creating and facilitating initiatives and events.
- Work with the ENGAP team to create and maintain a welcoming environment and provide opportunities that strengthen students' cultural identities.
- Organize and plan annual graduation for ENGAP students. Also organize and plan holiday party for the ENGAP team including students.
- Complete projects as assigned by the Director.
- Maintain contact with students to provide follow up support services.
- Liaise with various departments both within the university community and community at large including; University Counselling Centre, Indigenous Student Centre, other Access Programs, Housing resources, Band offices, and MMF authorities as required.
- Write letters of support for such things as AWs, VW's, deferred exams, exits, LOAs, financial funding from sources such as: student loans, First Nations Bands and MMF, scholarships, employment reference letters etc.
- Maintain records of student contacts on an ongoing basis.
- At the end of each semester, prepares a statistical report for the Director indicating the students they met with and the number of times that they met with each student.
- Participate in performance reviews with staff concerning individual student's academic performance.
- Perform other duties such as orientation, selection, standard recruitment and graduation as assigned.
- Assist students in applying for Scholarships and Bursaries.
- Maintain a database of scholarships and bursaries available.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
