EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY: Literacy Specialist
Squiala Elementary & Secondary School provides a holistic learning environment that accepts and appreciates the uniqueness of each child. In a culturally responsive and rich environment it is our goal to instill confidence and independence in our students by empowering physical, social, cultural and mental growth. Squiala Elementary & Secondary School is a First Nation band school and we hold our traditional cultural practices and language close to our hearts. We believe our children deserve the right to practice Stó:lō cultural ways of life. Culture and the Halq'eméylem language are integrated throughout the weekly class schedules. Cultural Knowledge Keepers provide this service to the students and cultural resources are available to teachers.
Who are we looking for?
- You foster students' self-esteem, motivation and sense of community responsibility.
- You help develop students' cognitive capacity, respect for learning, and self-regulation.
- You can provide an environment that ensures the physical and emotional safety and well-being of children.
- You have experience utilizing data to identify and address learning needs.
- You possess current knowledge of programs, support services, classroom resources and issues relative to vulnerable learners as well as a knowledge base of research in the foundational components of early literacy, including but not limited to language development, phonological and phonemic awareness, play-based learning, reading, writing, etc.
- You are able to plan and model lessons in small group and large group settings.
- You have the ability to work as part of a team to develop and implement literacy learning plans for students with academic, social and learning difficulties.
- You have experience designing, facilitating or co-facilitating in-service support for staff and caregivers.
- You practice trauma-informed teaching strategies and are committed to decolonizing educational practices.
- You have a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university and hold a valid BC Teaching Certificate.
Through cooperation with the Squiala First Nation Community Centre, Squiala Elementary & Secondary School enjoys a new school building as well as a full-size gymnasium, work-out room, sports field with playground, garden and greenhouse. Squiala Elementary School also offers its students bussing services, breakfast and lunch programs and has on-site counsellors as well as a Youth Resource Coordinator and Speech and Language Pathologist. Squiala First Nation is also happy to provide its staff with a pension plan, benefits program, and pays a competitively salary with SD33.
