SUPPLY CAFETERIA/FOOD SCHOOL ASSISTANT

Under the Principal's direction and Cafeteria Manager's supervision, assist the Food School Teacher and students with lunch preparation, clean-up, inventory management, cash handling, and other daily tasks to ensure smooth cafeteria operations.
Key Responsibilities Assist students with lunch preparation and clean-up
- Assist students by answering questions regarding room set-up, food preparation, serving, and clean-up; direct any unanswered questions to the Food School Teacher;
- Prepare food to be served, on a daily basis. This involves ensuring that meat is properly prepared (removing bones, cutting, washing, and weighing meat) and that all other food items are washed, cut and prepared in the proper fashion; responsible for ensuring that the necessary food items are properly packaged and stored until lunch service (i.e.. sandwiches);
- Responsible for preparing certain food items for the following day, including meat preparation, baking, dessert, etc.; assist with planning the menu, upon request;
- Assess the progress of the lunchtime preparation and aid students who do not have time to finish their job;
- Empty and clean dishes; perform daily clean-up, after the lunch service is finished, ensuring that the proper cleaning/sanitation procedures are being followed.
Assist students in the preparation and clean-up of food items for special functions/orders
- Assist with preparing catering orders and preparing designated rooms for special events (this involves setting up the school’s respective dining rooms), upon request; perform necessary clean-up;
- Prepare snack items, for day-care, as requested. This involves cleaning and packaging such items as vegetable and fruit trays or making other snack items.
Assist in maintaining inventory (may vary between cafeteria/food school locations)
- Assist with placing and receiving inventory orders, upon the request of the Food School Teacher/Cafeteria Manager on items such as bread, milk, ice cream, etc.; monitor these items, daily, to ensure that the cafeteria does not run out.
Perform Other Cafeteria Duties
- Responsible for the constant up-keep of the refrigerator and freezer, ensuring it is organized and clean. This also involves making sure that wet cloths are used to help keep vegetables fresh, and that all old/expired food is removed; responsible for restocking the refrigerator and freezer and moving all older stock to the front when new stock arrives;
- Responsible for laundering any place mats, aprons, and chef coats;
- Provide input, at the request of the Food School Teacher, as to a student’s performance with their job duties;
- Check to ensure that all equipment used during the course of the day has been properly shut off/down before leaving and secure all refrigerators, freezers, store room and access doors.
Operate cash
- Receive money;
- Count and balance cash; complete cash sheets.
Perform other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor Equipment Used Meat Slicer, Dishwasher, Food Processor, Mixers, Fryers, Ovens, Flat Tops, Stove, Washer/Dryer, Steamer, Confection Oven, and other Cafeteria utensils/equipment
Qualifications
- Secondary School Diploma and 3-6 months of related employment experience
- Ability to work with others to complete required job tasks
- Knowledge and application of safety/sanitation procedures outlined by the Principal, Cafeteria Manager and/or Food School Teacher
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, and others.
Additional Information
- This position works 6 hours per day, hours vary by school. This position will be servicing Uxbridge Secondary School.
- This is a supply position and hours of work are not guaranteed. Supply staff are called when permanent staff is not available for work.
