About the role

Overview

The Warehouse Associate is a vital member of the Food Security Team aiding in the coordination of collecting, processing, and re-distributing rescued food product from our grocery partners to various streams including (but not exclusive to) the Food Share Network agencies, The MSSC Market, and the meal programs at our Queens location. The Warehouse Associate must demonstrate exemplary organization, and communication skills as they will work under the direction of the Food Security Manager and Food Rescue Manager to execute the smooth flow of product between The Mustard Seed’s various locations as well as providing logistical support to The Mustard Seed’s events and outreach programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparing and labeling daily orders
  • Serving FSN agencies, which includes communicating with agency rep, building orders in an efficient and equitable way
  • Using the scale and corresponding scale program to record incoming and outgoing weights
  • Health and Safety – follow safe work practices and cleanliness
  • Effective communication with donors, vendors, partner agencies, staff, volunteers and general public etc
  • Attending and participating in all relevant staff/team meetings and training opportunities as available
  • Supporting the Food Security Manager with the orientation, training and oversight of food rescue volunteers/students working in the various stations in the warehouse as needed
  • Proper sorting of bread into various streams for farmer pickup or distribution to agencies
  • General cleanliness of all areas of the warehouse
  • Supporting the driver’s with certain tasks as available-ie safe unloading of the trucks when they are behind schedule, or assisting with taking out the cardboard bins
  • Occasional data collection and entry; organization of incoming and outgoing product
  • Occasional event support (as needed) which could include evenings and/or weekends
  • Occasional kitchen support (as needed) which could include lunch dishes, sweeping and mopping of floors
  • Communicate with The Market team for daily orders of perishable and non-perishable food
  • Participate in annual employee and program evaluation processes;
  • Other duties as required;

Qualifications

  • Required – Current forklift and power jack certification with experience completing daily inspection sheets (or willingness to obtain ASAP)

  • Required – Acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Clearance

  • Required – Computer Skills; working knowledge of Microsoft Office suit; competency in data collection, entry, and project management software

  • Required – Acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Clearance;

  • Required – Medical Clearance letter

  • Assets: Standard First Aid and CPR-C; WHIMIS; Food Safe; Food Handling Safety

  • Asset – Driver’s License and acceptable abstract

Terms of Employment

  • Must be willing to sign the staff code of conduct
  • Must read and agree to following The Mustard Seed policies which are a living, changing document
  • This position reports to: Food Security Manager
  • Term: Casual, On Call
  • Shift range: Monday to Saturday, 8am to 4pm; additional event support as needed
  • Must provide an acceptable criminal record check, including the level of clearance required to work with vulnerable people
  • Must provide completed Medical Assessment form from your Medical Practitioner

The Mustard Seed Street Church has been essential in fighting hunger and restoring faith to a large portion of people living in poverty, as well as the working poor, in greater Victoria since 1975. The Church ministries are nearly 100 percent community funded and include Vancouver Island's largest Food Bank, a Family Center, Hospitality programs, and addictions recovery at Hope Farm Healing Centre as well as more traditional Church services.
