LOCATION: Apply Digital is hybrid/remote friendly. The preferred candidate should be based in Canada, working in hours that align to ET (Eastern Timezone) or PT (Pacific Timezone). THE ROLE: The Staff Engineer is a key technical leader accountable for the successful construction and delivery of complex, innovation-forward client projects. In this specific role, you will be spearheading our "Content Scaling" and "Brand Standards" initiatives, leveraging the next generation of AI-driven workflows.
You are a master of delivery, leading through a combination of strong technical execution, pragmatic problem-solving, and a deep commitment to the health and performance of your team. This is a high-autonomy role. While you will often partner with Solution Architects on our largest engagements, you must be comfortable operating as the sole technical leader—the "General Contractor" who owns the build from architectural vision to final deployment.
Here is the truth: We do not expect you to be an AI expert today. We are looking for a Master of Engineering Fundamentals who is hungry to evolve. If you bring the battle-tested experience to instinctively know "good architecture" from "bad code"—if you can look at a system design and immediately smell the bottlenecks— we will teach you the AI stack. Responsibilities
- Delivery & Execution Ownership: You are the engine of the team. You take high-level architectural blueprints and translate them into detailed, executable technical tasks for yourself and the team. You own the "how" of the implementation.
- Engineering Rigor & Quality: You bring order to the chaos of innovation. You ensure that the entire solution—from API design and data handling to security and integration—is built to production standards. You move us from "prototype" to "enterprise-grade" with discipline.
- Learn & Implement AI Patterns: Transition from standard backend work to building next-generation features. Under the guidance of the Principal engineer, you will implement:
- Agentic Workflows: Orchestrating LLMs for complex tasks.
- RAG Systems: Building pipelines for semantic search.
- GCP Integration: Leveraging Vertex AI.
- Team Leadership & Mentorship: Act as the primary mentor for your engineering team. Foster a culture of psychological safety where engineers feel comfortable experimenting with new AI tools while adhering to engineering rigour.
- Partnership: Work in a "two-in-a-box" partnership with Solution Architects (when present) or directly with Client Stakeholders to manage scope, expectations, and technical reality.
Requirements
- Proven Leadership: A significant track record (Staff/Lead level) of delivering complex software projects and mentoring teams. You have high autonomy and can take a vague goal and turn it into shipped software.
- Generalist "Chops": Deep proficiency in modern software development. You are comfortable across the full stack and understand how to integrate new technologies into existing architectures. A strong track record of Typescript and modern Javascript development is highly preferred.
- System Design Fundamentals: You understand queues, caching, database schemas, and API design. You know how to build systems that survive in production.
- Curiosity: You have a demonstrated interest in Generative AI and are hungry to make this your career focus. Comfort reading Python is a strong plus, as many AI reference architectures and research papers use it as the lingua franca, even if our production stack does not.
- Communication: Excellent English communication skills (written and verbal). You can explain technical concepts like trees and graphs to a non-technical project manager as easily as you discuss architecture with a Solution Architect.
- Remote Collaboration: Experience working effectively with distributed teams across North America and LATAM time zones.
