As Canada’s leading mental illness research facility, CAMH’s Campbell Family Mental Health Research Institute (CFMHRI) is home to scientists, staff and research trainees conducting leading research to improve the understanding of the brain and the causes, the biomarkers and cures for mental illness as well as research to advance the prevention and treatment for mental illness and addictions across the lifespan. Within the Campbell Family Mental Health Research Institute, the Institute for Mental Health Policy Research (IMHPR) is home to leading scientific experts dedicated to informing policy and practice on mental illness and substance use disorders. IMHPR scientists conduct collaborative research on communities, populations, health systems and global health, and develop and evaluate prevention and intervention initiatives to reduce mental health and substance use challenges. IMHPR is committed to equity, informed by the social determinants of health.
About The Role IMHPR is seeking a full-time, permanent Scientist with expertise in qualitative and mixed-methods approaches to advance research on substance use, with particular emphasis on opioid use. The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge of substance use and harm reduction research, including proven expertise in opioid policy interventions, safer supply programs, supervised consumption services, and broader public health responses. They will conduct population-level substance use research, examining the socioeconomic, structural, and policy factors shaping substance use patterns, access to care, and health inequalities.
The successful candidate will lead the design and execution of qualitative and mixed-methods research projects focused on substance use, opioid policies, harm reduction, and health system interventions. They will lead community-based and policy-focused research, working closely with stakeholders, decision-makers, and people with lived and living experience (PWLLE) to generate actionable evidence that informs healthcare interventions, policy development, and harm reduction strategies. A strong focus will be placed on community-based participatory research and the evaluation of prevention, treatment, and harm reduction strategies in clinical, policy, and community settings. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate across disciplines, apply innovative research methodologies, and translate research findings into policy and practice to drive meaningful public health impact.
The candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing research methodologies that prioritize equity and the inclusion of marginalized populations. They will be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with policy makers, community organizations, harm reduction networks, Indigenous leaders, and healthcare providers. They will be responsible for developing high-impact peer-reviewed publications, and applying for and obtaining competitive research funding from external granting agencies. They will lead knowledge translation efforts, including scientific publications and the development of policy briefs, reports, and other products to effectively share research findings with diverse audiences. Additionally, the candidate will be responsible for facilitating collaborations with academic institutions, government agencies, and advocacy groups to maximize the policy impact of their work. The Scientist will also be responsible for leading and supervising a multi-disciplinary research team, including researchers, trainees, and community partners. Ensuring ethical compliance and adherence to institutional and regulatory research policies will be a key aspect of their responsibilities.
Job Requirements The successful applicant will have a PhD in Health Policy with a focus on substance use, mental health, and harm reduction research. The candidate must have a minimum of 3 years of post-doctoral experience as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. The successful candidate must have extensive experience in the design, execution, and dissemination of large-scale or national qualitative and mixed-methods research in the areas of health services, substance use, and opioid policy. They will also have extensive experience in evaluating system-level interventions and policies. They must have demonstrated experience collaborating with Health Canada and other government bodies. A strong track record of peer-reviewed publications is required. The candidate must have demonstrated ability to work with marginalized and structurally vulnerable populations, employing equitable, participatory, and trauma-informed research approaches. They must have demonstrated ability in leading multi-site, interdisciplinary research collaborations and supervising research teams including graduate trainees. Demonstrated ability to build relationships and stakeholder networks, facilitate policy-research partnerships, and translate findings into meaningful system-level change. Strong skills in the management and analysis of qualitative or mixed/methods data, and the use of advanced software (NVivo, Dedoose, REDCap) are required. Experience working with multi-site national research projects, in collaborating with Health Canada is required.
