Associate Director, Employee and Labour Relations
About the role
Reporting to the Executive Officer, AVP- People and Culture (EO, AVP-P&C), the Associate Director is one of three Associate Director’s responsible for overseeing the full breadth of human resources functions and services offered at Royal Roads University.
The Associate Director provides leadership and direction regarding the management of a comprehensive human resources administration including recruitment, employee engagement, labour and employee relations counseling, collective bargaining, job evaluation, compensation, training and development, performance management, records management, departmental budgeting, benefits management, Occupational Health and Safety and human resource systems.
The role is responsible for building relationships -across all executive portfolios and meeting regularly with representatives of strategic business units, to ensure HR processes and practices support, and are aligned with organizational goals and objectives. This position also facilitates organizational change efforts with a focus on key HR strategies that contribute to the success of Royal Roads University.
In addition to the generalist Human Resource leadership as outlined above the Associate Director Human Resources – Employee and Labour Relations works with the EO, AVP-P&C to provide leadership and direction with regard to the management of employee and labour relations.
Job Requirements
- A graduate degree in a related area (prefer Industrial/Labour Relations and/or Human Resource Management) and a minimum of seven years of directly related experience in complex environments that include a mix of unionized and non-unionized employee groups (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
- A Chartered Professional Human Resources (CPHR) designation and/or other relevant credential
- Leadership experience in labour relations and negotiating collective agreements
- Sound team leadership abilities with a focus on coaching and mentoring
- Exemplary skills in analytical reasoning and capacity to develop recommendations that will inform and enable executive decision-making
- Demonstrated exceptional judgment, discretion and professional courtesy
- Demonstrated experience developing effective employee relations and providing competent HR Service
- Skills and experience in negotiation, mediation and arbitration
- An understanding of the BC Public Sector and Post-Secondary Labour and Employee Relations climate and trends an asset
- Exceptional organizational skills to manage complex and diverse responsibilities and competing priorities in a dynamic work environment
- Experience as a leader in business transformation and change management initiatives
- Ability to adapt, negotiate, and prioritize
- Capacity to develop and nurture a broad range of relationships (with both internal and external stakeholders)
- As an ambassador for Royal Roads University, demonstrated commitment to excellence and professionalism
- Technologically savvy, with an aptitude for application of computer skills
- Strong service ethic.
Additional Information
This is a regular, full-time position working 37.5 hours per week. This position has been evaluated at ME-B with a salary range of $105,292 (minimum) to $123,872 (midpoint) to $142,453 (maximum) per annum. Employment offers will normally be made between the minimum and midpoint of the range and are determined by knowledge, experience and internal equity.
