About the role

The Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO) is seeking a Manager, Corporate Communications & Media Relations. This is a newly created, permanent position available immediately.

About RECO As Ontario’s regulator of more than 110,000 real estate agents and brokerages (often referred to as registrants), RECO administers and enforces the law that regulates trading in real estate in Ontario and enhances consumer confidence in the real estate services sector. The role Reporting to the Director, Communications & Stakeholder Relations, you will drive the execution and strategy behind RECO’s public voice. In this role, you will lead media relations and reputation safeguarding while guiding a dedicated, multidisciplinary team of five professionals across corporate communications, digital content and strategy. You will ensure all external narratives are synchronized flawlessly with internal priorities, navigating complex public issues with precision. Beyond managing day-to-day functions, you will serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, seamlessly preparing executive spokespeople for high-visibility public engagements.

Position responsibilities

Media relations & issues management Drive RECO’s external narrative by cultivating strong relationships with journalists, identifying storytelling opportunities, and strategically positioning RECO’s regulatory mandate in the public eye. Anticipate and mitigate reputational risks by monitoring industry trends, advising on complex emerging issues, and designing risk-aligned response strategies. Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, accurately drafting high-stakes messaging for executive attribution and comprehensively briefing spokespeople for public engagement.

Corporate communications & strategic planning Direct the design and strategic execution of integrated, multi-channel communications programs across the organization to support RECO’s operational mandates. Partner with department heads (e.g., Legal, Compliance, Customer Service) to translate complex regulatory frameworks into clear, accessible, and strategic corporate communications. Lead the end-to-end drafting, editing, and strategic alignment of marquee corporate documents, including the Annual Report, Business Plans, and AGM materials.

Digital communications and public engagement Oversee the public website to ensure it remains a dynamic, accessible hub for all stakeholders. Direct the team in executing digital content via a social media calendar and public awareness campaigns, that balances engagement with corporate objectives. Manage the strategy and budget for paid content and digital advertising campaigns.

People leadership & cross-functional alignment Champion an internal-first communications protocol, collaborating seamlessly with the Internal Communications Lead to ensure RECO’s leadership and staff are fully briefed on high-stakes news before public release. Drive collaboration across all Communications & Stakeholder Relations pillars (Corporate, Digital, Internal, and Stakeholder Relations) to maintain a unified corporate voice across high-visibility initiatives. Lead and inspire 3 direct reports (managing a total team of 5), establishing clear performance goals while fostering a culture of professional growth and data-driven decision-making.

Qualifications and experience Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations, political science, or related field. 7+ years of progressive experience in media relations, corporate communications, or crisis management roles. At least 2 years of experience directly managing teams and leading projects. Exceptional written and verbal communication with strong storytelling ability. Proven ability to cultivate media relationships. Sound judgment in handling sensitive and time-sensitive media situations. Proficient in media monitoring tools and analytics. Strong project and time management under tight deadlines. Leadership mindset and experience coaching staff. Experience in regulated sectors, regulatory bodies, or government. Bilingual in English and French preferred.
