Primary Functions: Provide initiative and leadership on the daily execution of Transportation Operations within a geographic territory. Manage and maintain local and national carrier relationships with direct responsibility for managing carrier service performance. Function as primary liaison with local DC Operations. Conduct analysis of transportation network to identify cost and service improvements. Lead and foster an environment around continuous improvement and LEAN initiatives.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
- Build and maintain strong partnerships with local and national carrier providers across multiple modes (Intermodal, LTL, TL, Parcel, Ocean).
- Hold carrier partners accountable to service goals, including on-time pickup/delivery and damage free shipments.
- Build and maintain strong partnerships with Grainger shipping locations assigned within regional territory including, Distribution Centers, Branch Network, Cross Dock Facilities, 3PL’s.
- Lead the design, implementation, and execution of regular audits at Grainger shipping/receiving facilities to ensure quality targets are met.
- Continually evaluate on-time delivery for both parcel and LTL networks to ensure Grainger delivers the highest levels of service to customers.
- Develop, analyze, recommend and lead the implementation of customized transportation solutions to improve service, reduce costs and increase the service offering.
- Create, maintain and review all SOP/MOP’s associated to transportation activities within assigned territory.
- Design, create and implement key performance indicators to measure objectives internally, and externally with carrier partners.
- Develop and conduct National or Regional RFP’s in conjunction with Transportation Management on a regular schedule.
- Design, prepare and conduct business reviews with senior leadership (internal/external) on carrier performance, and process / network improvement projects.
- Remain current on industry trends/news impacting transportation network and be seen as subject matter expert in the field.
- Other duties as assigned by Transportation Management.
Preferred Education & Experience:
- 3-5 years in logistics, transportation, operations or supply chain related field, specific transportation-related experience will be an asset.
- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain or other business related field and/or relevant combination of post-secondary education and work experience.
- Working experience in continuous improvement methodology/practices (Six Sigma, LEAN, Kaizen).
- Strong experience with ERP, Transportation/Warehouse Management, Routing software, freight payment and other supply chain-related technology.
- Project management experience.
- Exposure to change management principles through prior work experience.
Skills:
- Highly effective communication skills, verbal and written.
- Ability to communicate confidently and effectively in various ways up to VP level of management (e.g. written, oral, and presentation)
- Ability to build strong and long lasting interpersonal relationships with peers, supervisors, and other areas of business at all levels.
- Ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple priorities while delivering results.
- Strong analytical background, ability to work with large datasets and determine recommended course of action.
- Advanced skills in Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Word, SAP, SQL and the Microsoft Power Platform. (Power BI, Power Automate, Power Apps).
- Must be able to work well independently and with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to travel up to 20% of the time.
