About the role

JOB SUMMARY:

Truck Drivers load and deliver orders to customers in a timely, efficient, and professional manner, providing customers with the high level of customer service that is expected of Horizon representatives. Truck Drivers are required to strictly follow safety protocols while performing their job.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Customer Service

  • represents Horizon in a courteous, friendly, and helpful manner, helping customers with any questions or requests for information or letting them know whom they can contact to get the information they need (i.e., Marketing, Customer Service, AR).

  • ensures that products are delivered in good condition, in a timely manner.

  • ensures that the correct number of pieces are delivered and lets the customer know if there is a discrepancy and what will be done about it.

  • helps solve problems with delivery orders to the customer's satisfaction (ie. when picking errors or damaged or short-dated goods are delivered).

  • obtains payments for orders from customers as directed on the invoice, and ensure that the amounts and dates are correct, that cheques are filled out correctly, and that the monies are handled safely until they are given to Accounts Receivable (A/R).

  • accepts returns when necessary and ensures that the applicable paperwork is done and passed on to the appropriate person.

B. Driving:

  • operates the Horizon truck safely under various road and weather conditions as well as manoeuvres in areas where space is restricted.

  • drives defensively at all times, following all safety and traffic regulations.

  • is familiar with our delivery area and the assigned route.

  • Uses a map/google maps when the exact location of a delivery customer is not known.

C. Loading/Unloading and Product Handling:

  • loads the truck in an orderly fashion bearing in mind weight distribution and order of deliveries and safety of product.

  • maintains the most effective and optimum use of the delivery vehicles regarding decisions on which orders can be delivered.

  • uses the appropriate equipment and supplies to ensure that goods do not get damaged or move about while in transit (ex: load bars, pallet wrap, bungie cords, rope).

  • ensures that dry ice is used when loading frozen products, and that frozen goods are handled quickly and effectively to maintain the required temperature and food safety.

  • uses various pieces of equipment such as pallet movers, manual pallet jacks, dollies, and a power tailgate as needed.

  • liaises with purchasers to arrange for pickup of incoming goods.

  • unloads the truck at the end of the day, ensuring that equipment, supplies and returned products are put back in their proper locations.

D. Truck Maintenance:

  • Performs daily pre-use inspection of the vehicle, immediately informing the Assistant Manager or Manager of any problems.

  • does on-site maintenance as required and in a timely basis (ex: lubricating latches, hinges, tailgate, etc.)

  • cleans, or ensures that cleaning is done, to the inside and outside of the vehicle on a regular basis.

  • takes the vehicle in for servicing at the appropriate time and/or as directed. Informs the Assistant Manager of any servicing that is done so that they can maintain an overview and keep records of servicing.

  • ensures that any damages or breakdowns are reported immediately, and in consultation with the Assistant Manager, repaired promptly.

E. Miscellaneous Duties:

  • may require other warehouse work as part of the position.
  • liaises with the warehouse workgroup, customer service, marketing department, and accounts receivable regarding orders or customers when applicable.
  • ensures that the paperwork involved in deliveries is finished daily and any follow-up to deliveries is completed.
  • does pallet exchanges when necessary.
  • trains new drivers (and swampers) when necessary.
  • assists with special events (ex: trade shows) as required.
  • other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS + EXPECTATIONS:

  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license, with a ‘clean’ driver’s record and at least 1 year’s experience truck delivery driving
  • Air Brakes certificate required
  • Class 3 driver’s license preferred
  • Owner/operators welcome to apply
  • Defensive driving or professional driving lessons and experience an asset
  • Able to perform physically demanding work, including bending, reaching, pulling, pushing, and lifting up to 50lbs, as needed
  • Good customer service skills (friendly, professional, good communication)
  • Problem-solving abilities with ability to follow-up on details as required
  • Good spatial conceptualizing, (ability to judge tight spaces for parking and loading)
  • Solid attention to detail and experience palletizing product of varying shapes + sizes
  • Ability to work independently and stay on track to meet productivity goals

COMPENSATION + WORKING CONDITIONS:

This is a part-time and contract position with a set schedule of Saturday, Sunday and Statutory Holiday Mondays (2-8pm). On-call during the week (afternoon shift) if available. Overtime as needed. The starting wage for Drivers is $23.55/hour for those with a Class 5 license and $25.31/hour for those with a Class 3 license. We provide a paid 35-minute break.

The current contract is until January 31, 2026 and is subject to extensions or reductions as required. Advance notice will be provided.
