Salary : $32.62 per hour, 6.5 hours/day, 5 days/week

THE OPPORTUNITY: Neighborhood Assistant Support Fluency in Chinese required (SCHOOL & STUDENT SUPPORT A) A School & Student Support worker is hired to provide assistance in the school, with classroom assignments and management, maintaining appropriate behavior and school related operational activities. Assists in organizing and implementing programs and activities in support of students with special needs, behavioural issues and multi-cultural backgrounds. Liaise with parents, volunteers, school committees and community agencies. Operate a variety of instructional aid equipment and may supervise student activities.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12 plus 1-year post-secondary education in any of the following areas: Family Studies, Recreation Leadership or Management
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ related work experience
  • Working knowledge of the complex issues and needs facing students from low-income homes
  • Ability to communicate effectively by a variety of means, including written and public speaking, to a broad range of parents, professionals, and organizations in the assigned community
  • Experience working with community agencies and donors to partner or make donations
  • Experience successfully supporting families/caregivers who face multiple barriers to engagement with the education system
  • Excellent organizational skills including planning formal and informal parent engagement events
  • Ability to work as an effective team member, under the direction of a Principal and relate well to students, families/caregivers, outside agencies, volunteers, school committees and community agencies
  • Sound knowledge of neighborhood characteristics, needs and available resources
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office required
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain an Occupational First Aid certificate and will be required to perform Occupational First Aid if assigned by the Supervisor. OFA attendants may, at the direction of Employee Services, be required to perform emergency coverage at other locations
  • Fluency in Cantonese and Mandarin and written traditional or simplified Chinese

Duties:

  • Performs School & Student Support functions
  • Participates as a member of the school team in developing and executing plans to increase the involvement of parents/caregivers and the community at large in the education process and school activities
  • Designs and develops channels of communication between the school, parents / caregivers, and the community by a variety of oral and written methods including direct contact, newsletters, parent / caregiver meetings, public meetings, drop-in centres and other similar means
  • Under the supervision of the Principal, assists with communication to parents / caregivers (e.g: attendance, school activities/ initiatives, opportunities offered in the community etc.)
  • Provides support and encouragement to parents/caregivers to become involved and participate in the school community
  • Liaises with various community agencies and makes use of various public community forums to promote the activities and goals of the school and Enhanced Services
  • At the direction of the school Principal, secures, organizes, and distributes donations to children and families / caregivers who require additional support
  • Supports student learning and engagement within the school community and outside of the school community
  • Provides assistance to other school staff in support of school activities/after school programming
  • Performs related work as required, including overseeing project budgets, proposal writing, and fundraising
  • Performs other work within the band as assigned
