About the role
ABOUT THE ROLE
SketchDeck.ai is transforming construction estimation through applied AI. Our platform helps construction professionals work faster, improve accuracy, and bid on more opportunities. We are looking for a Senior Full-Stack Engineer to design, build, and operate the product experiences and services behind our AI-enabled construction estimation platform. This is a hands-on role with broad ownership across React and TypeScript, Python services, MongoDB data models, background processing, and integrations with our computer vision systems. Our product goes beyond a typical web application. Estimators use an interactive canvas to review, correct, and approve computer vision results across structural drawings containing hundreds of pages and thousands of detected elements. This creates meaningful challenges across rendering performance, client-side state, data access, asynchronous processing, usability, and reliability. You will work directly with the Head of Engineering and collaborate with product, design, platform, and machine learning engineers. You will influence technical direction, own outcomes, and see your work reach customers quickly.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Product Engineering
- Design, build, test, deploy, and maintain customer-facing features across React, TypeScript, Python, and Flask.
- Own features from discovery and technical design through release, production monitoring, and ongoing improvement.
- Translate customer and product needs into maintainable technical solutions.
- Balance near-term delivery with the architectural work required to keep the product secure, reliable, and maintainable.
Interactive Drawing and Frontend Engineering
- Build performant interfaces for reviewing and editing detection results within large structural drawings.
- Improve rendering, navigation, selection, annotation, zooming, and editing workflows in our Pixi.js-based canvas.
- Profile and optimize browser rendering, memory use, network activity, and client-side state.
- Build accessible, responsive interfaces using React, TypeScript, MUI, TanStack Query, and Zustand.
- Establish clear boundaries between server, application, component, and canvas state.
Backend Services and Data
- Design and operate Python services and secure REST APIs supporting product and machine learning workflows.
- Build for partial failure, retries, duplicate requests, timeouts, and changing workloads.
- Design and optimize MongoDB and DocumentDB models, queries, indexes, and aggregation patterns.
- Troubleshoot issues across APIs, workers, databases, object storage, and external integrations.
- Help enforce secure data access and tenant isolation throughout the application.
Machine Learning and Asynchronous Processing
- Integrate OCR, object detection, and related computer vision workflows into clear, correctable user experiences.
- Design contracts that allow product services and models to evolve independently.
- Build reliable workflows for long-running inference, partial results, reprocessing, and model version changes.
- Design background jobs for retries, idempotency, backpressure, timeouts, and failure recovery.
- Ensure reruns and recovery workflows protect existing customer work.
Quality and Production Ownership
- Write focused unit, integration, component, and end-to-end tests using Vitest, React Testing Library, Cypress, and pytest.
- Improve CI/CD quality gates, release validation, logging, metrics, error reporting, and tracing.
- Participate in incident response, root-cause analysis, and corrective engineering work.
- Verify that your changes work in production and measure their impact.
Technical Leadership
- Contribute to architecture decisions and break complex initiatives into safe, reviewable increments.
- Mentor engineers through pairing, code review, design feedback, and knowledge sharing.
- Improve recurring problems at the system, tooling, and process levels.
ABOUT YOU
- You have genuine depth in frontend and backend development and can own a feature across both.
- You care about business outcomes and user experience. You understand that technically correct software can still fail if it is slow, confusing, or difficult to operate.
- You make pragmatic decisions based on customer impact, delivery risk, maintainability, and operating cost.
- You improve established systems incrementally while protecting active customers.
- You take ownership beyond implementation. You test your work, observe it in production, respond when it fails, and complete follow-up work.
- You communicate clearly with engineers, product leaders, designers, and subject matter experts.
- You use AI-assisted development tools to improve speed and quality while reviewing their output carefully.
MUST-HAVE QUALIFICATIONS
- 6 or more years of professional software development experience with substantial full-stack production ownership.
- 3 or more years of regular React and TypeScript development.
- Strong knowledge of modern React patterns, component design, data fetching, state management, and frontend performance.
- Production experience with Python and Flask, FastAPI, Django, or a similar framework.
- Experience designing, building, and operating REST APIs.
- Strong HTML and CSS fundamentals and experience with a production component library or design system.
- Hands-on experience with Docker and a major cloud platform such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Production experience with MongoDB, DocumentDB, or another document database, including query and index optimization.
- Experience building or operating asynchronous job systems, with practical knowledge of retries, idempotency, duplicate processing, timeouts, and recovery.
- Strong automated testing discipline across frontend and backend code.
- Experience diagnosing performance and reliability issues across multiple parts of a system.
- Understanding of scalable application design, authentication, authorization, and secure data access.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with Canvas, WebGL, Pixi.js, Three.js, Konva, Fabric.js, or another browser rendering framework.
- Experience optimizing interactive graphics with large numbers of rendered objects.
- Experience with coordinate systems, transformations, hit testing, selection tools, or visual annotation workflows.
- Experience presenting machine learning output for human review and correction.
- Experience handling large PDFs, technical drawings, images, or document-processing workflows.
- Experience with MUI, complex data grids, or high-volume editing workflows.
- Experience maintaining and incrementally refactoring an established production codebase.
- Experience with multi-tenant SaaS, Redis, object storage, managed queues, Auth0, observability, CI/CD, or infrastructure as code.
- Experience working in a growing software company where engineers own features from design through production.
OUR TECHNOLOGY
Frontend: React 19, TypeScript, Vite, MUI 7, TanStack Query, Zustand, Pixi.js, Vitest, React Testing Library, and Cypress. Backend and Data: Python, Flask, MongoDB, Amazon DocumentDB, Redis, and pytest. Infrastructure: Docker, AWS, selected Google Cloud workloads, Bitbucket Pipelines, Nginx, Auth0, Sentry, PostHog, and Prometheus. Machine Learning: Python-based computer vision services, OCR and document-processing workflows, and YOLO-family models.

About SketchDeck.ai
SketchDeck.ai has developed LIFT, an automated material take-off software that is changing the way estimators work in the steel industry. It is the first solution for structural steel take-offs that uses machine learning technology to identify structural elements automatically from 2D engineering drawings. LIFT saves estimators valuable time that was previously spent on tedious, repetitive tasks.
With LIFT, what used to take hours can now be done in a matter of minutes, reducing human error and ensuring accuracy and efficiency in the estimation process. The time saved allows estimators to bid on more projects, improve their win rates, build more confidence with their material take-offs, and build relationships with clients.
