About the role

Your Responsibilities Reporting to the Senior Engineer, Mechanical & Piping, the Mechanical Engineer – Junior (Engineer-in-Training or early-career Mechanical Engineer) will support mechanical and piping design, analysis, and execution for projects across the KSPC portfolio. This role will be based in both the Saskatoon Office and the Bethune Mine as part of a rotational assignment, providing the opportunity to work in both a design/engineering office environment and in the field. The scope of work includes engineering studies, detailed engineering, coordination of work, and field engineering during construction.

The successful candidate will contribute to capital and maintenance projects while learning KSPC’s engineering standards, processes, and safety culture, and will receive mentorship from senior engineering staff to build technical and project execution skills.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Assist in the preparation, review, and updating of mechanical and piping drawings, specifications, and design documents in compliance with KSPC standards, codes, and best practices.
  • Conduct mechanical design and analysis for small installations, modifications, and maintenance projects under supervision.
  • Support engineering studies and detailed design packages, including Material Take-Offs (MTOs), cost estimates, and constructability reviews.
  • Participate in the development of maintenance procedures, troubleshooting guides, and root cause analyses.
  • Assist with Requests for Information (RFIs) and coordinate with field personnel to address technical issues.
  • Contribute to pre-commissioning and commissioning activities as directed.
  • Support the Senior Engineer in managing interfaces between internal teams, contractors, and engineering consultants.
  • Assist in the preparation of project scopes, schedules, and budgets for mechanical and piping activities.
  • Coordinate design deliverables with vendors, procurement, and construction teams.
  • Participate in both office-based coordination and site-based field engineering during construction.
  • Help ensure that designs consider constructability, operability, maintainability, and safety.
  • Actively participate in on-the-job training, mentoring sessions, and formal development programs.
  • Gain direct exposure to both office engineering workflows and field execution activities through rotation between the Saskatoon Office and Bethune Mine.
  • Build knowledge of KSPC’s design specifications, asset lifecycle planning, and engineering workflows.
  • Stay current on relevant industry codes, standards, and emerging technologies.
  • Follow all KSPC safety policies and procedures, actively participating in safety meetings and audits.
  • Support hazard identification and risk assessments for assigned work.

YOUR PROFILE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Eligible for registration as an Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) with APEGS (or equivalent).
  • 0–5 years of mechanical engineering experience; co-op or internship experience in mining and/or heavy industry preferred.
  • Familiarity with mechanical equipment, piping systems, and rotating machinery is an asset.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills; able to work in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Willingness to rotate between Saskatoon Office and Bethune Mine as project needs.
