About the role

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Outdoor Education Winter Supervisor plays a key role in supporting Mt Seymour’s Outdoor Education programs during the winter season. This position is responsible for supervising the operation of the Snowshoe Centre, and daily snowshoe program operations, ensuring the safety and well-being of participants, and providing leadership to a team of instructors. The supervisor will act as a role model, mentor, and resource, ensuring programs are delivered in alignment with Mt Seymour’s Mission and Core Values. We have two Supervisor positions available, one with an additional focus on administration, and one with an additional focus on trail management.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Sign and uphold Mt Seymour’s Confidentiality Agreement.

  • Supervise the daily operation of the Snowshoe Centre, including ticket sales, issuing snowshoe rentals, check-in of group and public tour participants, ensuring completion of waivers, and providing general information and assistance to all guests.

  • Provide on-hill support and guidance to instructors, ensuring program quality, guest satisfaction, and adherence to safety standards.

  • Assist with training, scheduling, and performance management of seasonal Outdoor Education staff.

  • Act as the first point of contact for program-related issues, escalating concerns to management when necessary.

  • Ensure participants’ safety through risk management, emergency response readiness, and clear communication of safety protocols.

  • Support logistics, including equipment distribution, trail checks, and group management.

  • Deliver exceptional guest service by fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and educational environment.

  • Assist with curriculum delivery as needed (snowshoe guiding, interpretation, teaching winter ecology).

  • Assist with program development and content creation.

  • Promote environmental education and sustainable mountain practices.

  • Provide all necessary clothing for protection against the natural elements and ability to work outside in a mountain environment for 8 hours.

ADMINISTRATION SUPERVISOR:

  • Respond to Outdoor Education & Snowshoe related emails and inquiries in a timely and professional manner.

  • Coordinate and confirm group bookings, including communicating pre-arrival information, setting up and issuing waiver of liability, travel & parking arrangements and other requirements to clients.

  • Prepare schedules for guides to ensure efficient operations and adequate staffing for public and private school & group programs.

  • Maintain records related to attendance, staffing, and program logistics.

  • Support communication between the Outdoor Education and Guest Experience department, guides, and management.

TRAIL SUPERVISOR:

  • Monitor and assess trail conditions daily to ensure safety and usability.

  • Coordinate and communicate trail closures, reroutes, or hazards to staff and guests.

  • Oversee snowshoe trail signage, markers, and interpretive elements.

  • Work with operations teams to support trail preparation and maintenance.

  • Ensure instructors are briefed on trail conditions and safety protocols.

  • Ensure guests using our trails are compliant with ticketing and snowshoe requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Supervisory or team lead experience in outdoor education, recreation, or guest services.

  • Strong organizational and administrative skills; experience managing bookings and staff schedules AND/OR knowledge of winter trail safety, outdoor risk management, and group leadership.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and customer service skills.

  • Completion of, or current enrollment in, a degree or diploma in Education, Recreation, Biology, Environmental Sciences, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience working with both adults and children.

  • Experience leading groups in an outdoor setting.

  • Knowledge of local First Nations history and culture.

  • Standard First Aid and CPR certification by your first start date of employment.

  • Familiarity with Mt Seymour snowshoe winter trails.

  • Knowledge of Mt Seymour flora and fauna.

  • Knowledge of wilderness travel and safety procedures.

  • Primitive survival skills and bushcraft knowledge.

  • A big love for the outdoors and sharing it with others.

  • Exemplifies the following qualities: social and environmental responsibility, safety awareness, flexibility, a sense of humor, and a passion for continuous learning and mentorship.

  • Enthusiastic, energetic and positive attitude.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work outdoors in all winter conditions.

  • Sustain physical activity for 8 working hours per day over variable terrain.

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds for up to 8 working hours per day.

  • Available to work weekends and some evenings.

  • Must be willing to complete a criminal record check.
