The Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project is a multi-phase project that will transform the hospital into a modernized medical and surgical health care campus. Phase one is slated to open in spring 2025 and phase two in 2030%2F.

• New health care pavilion with 83 beds to support maternity, neonatal intensive care, medicine and mental health patients

Burnaby Hospital plays an essential role to those living in the community by delivering a variety health care services. Services and specialties include emergency medicine, intermediate-level critical care, medical imaging, internal medicine, hospitalist medicine, geriatric medicine, neurology, gastroenterology, palliative, psychiatry, oncology, outpatient clinics, and an extensive surgery program with anesthesia, orthopedics, general surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynecology, urology and plastics specialties.

Detailed Overview

Supporting the Vision, Values, Purpose and Commitments of Fraser Health including service delivery that is centered around patients/clients/residents and families and under the delegation of the Registered Speech Language Pathologist and within the Speech-Language & Audiology Canada (SAC) Code of Ethics, the Speech Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) implements rehabilitative Speech Language Pathology treatment plans and programs and assists the Registered, etc.

Responsibilities

1. Administers defined screening protocols for speech, language, and swallowing, without interpretation, selected by the supervising Registered Speech Language Pathologist.
2. Assists the Registered Speech Language Pathologist during assessments, including, but not limited to, collecting data, assisting with behaviour management techniques, providing positive reinforcement as directed.
3. Assists the Registered Speech Language Pathologist in providing care to clients with dysphagia (e.g., assisting with feeding of patients, demonstrating and practicing compensatory strategies and/or exercises).
4. Follows and implements documented treatment plans or protocols developed by the supervising Registered Speech Language Pathologist clients in individual and group activities.
5. Provides aspects of treatment to clients as directed by the Registered Speech Language Pathologist. Treatment may include but is not limited to the use of virtual care when the supervising Registered Speech Language Pathologist identifies clients for this service delivery model.
6. Documents client performance during treatment and reporting the information to the supervising Registered Speech Language Pathologist. Assists with documentation in compliance with the Documentation & Records Management standard of practice and associated clinical practice guideline as per College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals of British Columbia and Fraser Health guidelines.
7. Relays treatment processes (e.g., scheduling, treatment goals and activities, home programming, etc.) to clients with support and approval of the supervising Registered Speech Language Pathologist.
8. Participates in family conferences, case conferences or interprofessional team conferences with the supervising Registered Speech Language Pathologist present.
9. Assists in the provision of certified practice services, excluding the performance of restricted activities, as prescribed by the registrant and in keeping with Communication Health Assistants standards.
10. Assists the Registered Speech Language Pathologist in communicating with clients when there is a language difference, and the Speech Language Pathology Assistant is competent in the client’s language. The Speech Language Pathology Assistant may also arrange for translator or interpreter services as directed.
11. Assists with program development under the guidance of the supervising Registered Speech Language Pathologist
12. Programs and creates augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) resources.
13. Assists the Registered Speech Language Pathologist with research projects, in-service training and family or community education that has been approved by the supervising Registered Speech Language Pathologist.
14. Under Speech Language Pathology supervision, assists with Speech Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) student training and practicum.
15. Provides assistance to Registered Speech Language Pathologist ...
16. Performs administrative functions such as answering the telephone, directing calls, data entry, assisting in inventory control, entering and updating patient information, obtaining patient information and completes necessary patient related forms.
17. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education, Training & Experience

Completion of a Rehabilitation Assistant Program or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
