About the role

The Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Program and Treatment Centre at NBRHC is an individualized service available to survivors of sexual assault, intimate partner violence. The program provides emergency health care and psychosocial support, as well as follow up care, by specially trained nurses.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing safe, competent and ethical nursing care as outlined in the College of Nurses of Ontario Practice Standards and Guidelines for Ethical Behavior, North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC) policies/procedures, and the standards of care appropriate to his /her area of clinical practice. RN’s provide the full range of care requirements for patients with varying outcomes

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Program and Treatment Centre at NBRHC is an individualized service available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to adult and pediatric survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. The program provides emergency medical and nursing care, forensic evidence collection, forensic photography and documentation, safety planning, STI treatment and psychosocial support. Follow up care is provide on an individual bases.

QUALIFICATIONS

Certification/Experience/Knowledge:

  • Current Certificate of Registration ~ College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • Current B.C.L.S. Certificate (within 1 year) required
  • Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) Certificate required (training delivered by Health
  • Centre upon hire)
  • Excellent physical assessment skills required
  • Ability to practice autonomously and apply critical thinking and complex decision-making skills
  • Recent (2-3 years) experience working on a Medical/Surgical or Paediatric Unit required
  • Recent (1-2 years) experience in Emergency (within past 2-3 years) an asset
  • Experience in Mental Health Nursing an asset Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) certification required or willing to complete the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training offered by the provincial network
  • Demonstrate knowledge of interpersonal violence and its impact on health and wellness
  • Demonstrate principles of trauma informed care in supporting victims of sexual assault and domestic violence
  • Demonstrate knowledge of community resources pertaining to sexual assault and domestic violence
  • Demonstrate knowledge of First Nations culture and completion of Indigenous Cultural Safety Training, or willingness to obtain

Skills/Abilities:

  • Valid Class G driver’s license, access to a personal vehicle, and ability to travel
  • Willing and able to take call and arrive to the hospital within 60 minutes of call
  • Demonstrate commitment to ongoing education is required
  • Knowledge and experience with computerized work environments and providing presentations
  • Self-directed professional who functions with minimal supervision required
  • Good attendance and work record required
  • Must demonstrate commitment to ensure your safety, the safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors
  • Must support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events in this organization
  • Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required. All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the identified French requirement has been met or there are no successful bilingual candidates. A formal French test will be conducted to evaluate the proficiency level.

The North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC) is a unique healthcare organization with three primary roles. It provides acute care services to North Bay and its surrounding communities, it is the district referral centre providing specialist services for smaller communities in the area, and it is the specialized mental health service provider serving all of northeast Ontario

NBRHC has 389 beds and numerous outpatient and outreach services in North Bay and throughout the northeast region.

NBRHC is one of four major acute care hospitals serving northeast Ontario; the others being Sault Area Hospital, Timmins and District Hospital and Health Sciences North (Sudbury). The area is also served by small community hospitals like Mattawa and West Nipissing General hospitals.
