The payroll department is responsible for managing and processing pay for more than 7,000 permanent and temporary university employees on a bi-weekly cycle. The entire payroll operation ensures that employees are paid accurately and on time. Responsibilities include salary and wage calculations; deductions and remittances; regulatory compliance; pay distribution via direct deposit; record keeping and financial reporting. Payroll provides customer support to both employees and SFU’s faculty and departmental administrators.
By performing these tasks, the payroll team has a critical role in managing one of the university's largest expenses.

About the Role

The Manager, Payroll leads the University’s payroll operations, ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of all payroll activities. The role is responsible for developing internal controls, overseeing bi-weekly salary and benefit disbursements for faculty and staff, and managing statutory deductions, remittances, reconciliations, and reporting. The role acts as the University’s subject matter expert on payroll and taxation, including the Income Tax Act, Employer Health Tax Act, Canada Pension Plan, and Employment Insurance. The role oversees related General Ledger processes and reconciles payroll vendor accounts. The role supports the Director of Financial Operations in strategic planning and provides expert analysis to recommend process and system improvements. The role collaborates with HR, IT, and departmental administrators to ensure consistent and efficient payroll practices across the institution

The ideal candidate will have considerable payroll expertise and is a leader with proven integrity and ethical conduct. They will have in depth understanding of regulatory and compliance obligations. The candidate must be adept with enterprise software, focused on payroll systems. The ability to lead projects and implement policy, process, and statutory changes while showing a continuous improvement mindset would be a great asset. Additionally, the ability to engage with stakeholders and collaborate across teams is also instrumental to the success of this role.
