About Musqueam
We are traditional hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking people. Today, we are a strong, growing community of over 1,300 members. We live on a small portion of our traditional territory, known as the Musqueam Indian Reserve, located south of Marine Drive near the mouth of the Fraser River. The name Musqueam relates back to the River Plant, the name of the plant is məθkʷəy̓. There is a story that has been passed on from generation to generation that explains how we became known as the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) - People of the River Plant. We have always moved throughout our territory using the resources it provides for fishing, hunting, trapping and gathering. We remain distinct and our cultural practices are strong, despite the devastating impacts of residential schools, colonial laws banning our ceremonies, and other attempts to assimilate our people. Our lands and waters continue to support our cultural and economic practices while serving as a source of knowledge and memory, encoded with our teachings and laws. Position Summary
Reporting to the Senior Director, Communications and Engagement, the Manager of Marketing and Communications is responsible for the operational delivery of communications services for the Musqueam Indian Band (MIB). This role leads the day-to-day execution of communications, media, and branding initiatives. The Manager will be responsible for supervising a small team, and ensuring that outputs are aligned with the strategic direction set by the Senior Director. The Manager translates high-level marketing and communications strategies into actionable plans, manages workflows, and ensures the timely development and delivery of internal and external communications materials.
Roles & Responsibilities
Marketing, Branding & Campaign Support
- Support the execution of marketing and promotional campaigns to increase awareness of programs, services, and initiatives
- Ensure all materials align with established brand standards, and support the consistent application of Musqueam’s visual identity and messaging
- Coordinate the creation of marketing assets, including digital and print materials
- Contribute to the ongoing refinement and implementation of branding tools, templates, and guidelines
Communications & Content Execution
- Implement communications and marketing strategies developed by the Senior Director
- Oversee the development, editing, and distribution of communications materials, including announcements, newsletters, web content, social media, media press kits and promotional materials
- Manage the execution of internal communications initiatives to support effective information sharing across departments and staff
- Ensure consistency, quality, and cultural alignment of all communications outputs with consideration of appropriate cultural protocols
Team Leadership & Operations
- Supervise, coach, and support a small team, including assigning work, setting priorities, and monitoring performance
- Oversee daily communications and marketing operations, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery of work
- Manage workflow, intake, and prioritization of communications requests across the organization
- Attend both internal and external meetings and events with the Sr Director as required
- Work closely with the Sr Director on short-term and long-term initiatives
Media Relations & Public Engagement Support
- Build and maintain working relationships with media contacts, partners, and external stakeholders
- Coordinate and organize press events, media briefings, and community-facing announcements
- Oversee media materials such as backgrounders, press releases, and briefing notes for review and approval by the Senior Director
- Monitor media coverage and support the preparation of summaries and reports
- Respond to media requests promptly, with consideration of the news cycle
- Support media inquiries by coordinating responses and logistics; escalate sensitive or high-profile issues to the Senior Director
Budget & Administrative Support
- Support administration of the departmental budget, including tracking expenditures, coordinating vendors, and processing invoices
- Assist with procurement of services such as design, printing, advertising, and media placements
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Post-secondary education in Communications, Public Relations, or a related field is an asset; equivalent experience will be considered
5 to 7 years of experience in communications, including some supervisory or team lead experience
- Experience supporting the implementation of communications strategies and plans
- Experience with budget tracking and administrative financial processes
- Strong writing, editing, and content development skills across multiple platforms
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Zoom, Adobe Acrobat, Canva, CapCut, and social media platforms
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities with a high level of confidentiality and time sensitivities
- Ability to work collaboratively while also taking initiative on day-to-day operations
- Cultural competency and knowledge of Musqueam traditions or willingness to learn
- Criminal record check
Working Conditions
- The work is performed in an office environment.
- Evenings and Weekends will be required as needed
