Position Summary
Reporting to the Associate Dean, School of Applied Sciences, the Chemistry Laboratory Technologist is responsible for the coordination and delivery of laboratory services that support teaching and learning activities. The Technologist provides technical support to faculty, staff, and students, ensuring laboratories are prepared, equipped, and operated in accordance with established academic requirements and safety standards.
The Technologist performs a range of technical and operational duties, including laboratory setup, equipment maintenance, safety monitoring, inventory control, procurement support, and scheduling coordination. The role requires the application of specialized technical knowledge and experience to support laboratory activities and resolve issues.
The incumbent also supports the coordination of laboratory resources, including supplies, equipment, and scheduling, and provides guidance and technical assistance to laboratory technicians, co-op students, and lab monitors.
Responsibilities:

Provides technical and operational support for chemistry laboratories.

Prepares laboratory setups, reagents, materials, and equipment based on course requirements

Assists in maintaining laboratory manuals and instructional materials
-
Ensures laboratories are maintained in a clean, organized, and ready state
-
Supports the maintenance of a safe laboratory environment.
-
Follows and reinforces established laboratory safety procedures and protocols (e.g., WHMIS, OHSA)
-
Monitors laboratory conditions, equipment, and safety systems (e.g., fume hoods, eyewash stations)
-
Assists with the handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials
-
Reports safety concerns and participates in inspections and safety reviews
-
Maintains laboratory equipment; performs routine maintenance, calibration, and minor repairs on laboratory instruments
-
Coordinates servicing with external providers when required
-
Provides guidance to faculty and students on proper equipment use
-
Supports the management of laboratory supplies and equipment.

Maintains inventory of chemicals and equipment; monitors supply levels and identifies replenishment needs
-
Assists in scheduling laboratory activities in collaboration with faculty
-
Coordinates access to shared equipment and lab space
-
Provides day-to-day guidance to laboratory technicians, co-op students, and lab monitors
-
Assists in training faculty and students on laboratory procedures and equipment
-
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications/Experience
-
Three-year diploma in chemistry or chemistry engineering technology
-
Minimum three (3) years of practical laboratory experience in a chemistry or related scientific laboratory environment
-
Experience supporting laboratory operations, including preparation of materials, equipment maintenance, and adherence to safety procedures
-
Experience in an educational or academic laboratory environment preferred
-
Experience with chemical handling, storage, and disposal in accordance with safety regulations (e.g., WHMIS)
-
Experience troubleshooting laboratory equipment and supporting routine maintenance activities
-
Proven ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and provide training and guidance to team members and students
-
Experience and understanding of working effectively in a diverse academic environment
Proof of credentials or equivalencies from accredited regional or federal post secondary institutions and/or their foreign equivalents will be required at the time of job offer.
