Position Reports To: Senior Geotechnical Engineer

Position Overview

Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, the Underground Geotechnical Engineer will provide practical geotechnical support to underground mine operations at the New Afton Mine.

This role is focused on supporting safe and effective underground development, rehabilitation, ground support implementation, and geotechnical risk management. The successful candidate will work closely with Mine Operations, Mine Planning, Geology, and the broader Technical Services team to translate geotechnical observations, monitoring data, and design requirements into clear, field-ready work plans.

The Underground Geotechnical Engineer will support routine underground inspections, ground support design, rehabilitation work planning, geotechnical monitoring, and ground control compliance. This is a hands-on operational role suited to an engineer who is comfortable working underground, enjoys solving practical field challenges, and is developing strong technical judgement in underground rock mechanics and ground control.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine underground inspections, damage mapping, and field reviews to identify ground control hazards, verify excavation conditions, and support safe mining practices.

  • Prepare and issue geotechnical work packages, including ground support design prints, cablebolt layouts, rehabilitation work plans.

  • Support medium- and long-range mine planning by providing geotechnical input on work scope, sequencing, rehabilitation requirements, and operational constraints.

  • Coordinate with Mine Operations, Mine Planning, and Technical Services to communicate geotechnical priorities, support scheduling of geotechnical work, and follow up on execution progress.

  • Review mine designs, development layouts, engineering prints, and work plans to identify geotechnical risks and recommend appropriate ground control measures.

  • Interpret geotechnical monitoring data, including convergence scans, instrumentation, inspections, and underground observations, to assess ground performance and support ground control decisions.

  • Conduct stability assessments using empirical, analytical, and observational methods to support ground support design and rehabilitation recommendations.

  • Support implementation and maintenance of the Ground Control Management Plan, Cave Management Plan, seismic risk management processes, and related ground control systems.

  • Assist with ground support quality assurance and quality control programs, including installation verification, pull testing, resin testing, shotcrete testing, and documentation of deficiencies.

  • Support geotechnical instrumentation programs, ground support trials, vendor engagement, consultant coordination, and crew training initiatives as required.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.

  • Minimum 4+ years of relevant experience in ground control, underground mine engineering, underground geotechnical engineering, or geotechnical consulting.

  • Registered, or eligible for registration, as a P.Eng. with Engineers and Geoscientists BC.

  • Experience working in underground mining environments

  • Experience working with mass mining methods, including block caving or other caving methods, is considered an asset.

  • Working knowledge of rock mechanics principles, underground ground support systems, and geotechnical risk management.

  • Familiarity with CAD, 3D mine design, geological/geotechnical modelling, or geotechnical analysis software such as Deswik, Leapfrog, Rocscience, FLAC3D, or similar tools is considered an asset.

  • Strong safety mindset, communication skills, and ability to coordinate effectively across disciplines and departments

  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and exercise sound technical judgement with guidance from senior technical staff.

Other Requirements

Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:

  • Successful completion of pre-placement functional screen

  • Provide proof of a valid Class 5 driver’s license

  • Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada

  • Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements

Compensation
