Position Summary

Black & McDonald is seeking a motivated and safety-focused 3rd Class Power Engineer to join our Operations team in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Working in a high-pressure steam heating plant, the successful candidate will support the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of boilers, steam distribution systems, and associated plant equipment during regular daytime hours.

The 3rd Class Power Engineer will perform operational rounds, equipment monitoring, preventative maintenance support, water treatment testing, and troubleshooting activities while ensuring compliance with applicable regulations, plant operating procedures, and Black & McDonald safety standards.

Duties And Responsibilities

Plant Operations

Assist in the operation and monitoring of high-pressure steam boilers and auxiliary systems. Conduct routine plant inspections and equipment rounds. Monitor and record operating data, including steam production, pressures, temperatures, water levels, and fuel consumption. Operate pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, condensate systems, and supporting equipment. Support boiler startups, shutdowns, and load adjustments as directed. Monitor building and distribution system performance to ensure reliable steam delivery. Maintain accurate operating logs, maintenance records, and shift reports.

Water Treatment and Environmental Compliance

Perform boiler and condensate water testing. Monitor and maintain chemical treatment programs. Record water quality data and report abnormalities. Assist in ensuring compliance with environmental and regulatory requirements.

Maintenance Support

Perform routine preventative maintenance activities on plant equipment. Assist tradespersons and contractors during maintenance projects and outage activities. Identify equipment deficiencies and report maintenance requirements. Support troubleshooting of mechanical and operational issues. Participate in annual inspections, testing programs, and plant shutdown activities.

Safety and Compliance

Follow all Black & McDonald safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices. Participate in lockout/tagout, hazard assessments, and permit-to-work activities. Maintain a clean and organized work environment. Support emergency response activities and report unsafe conditions immediately. Ensure compliance with Manitoba workplace safety regulations and Power Engineers legislation.

Teamwork and Continuous Improvement

Work collaboratively with plant operators, maintenance staff, and management. Participate in operational meetings and training programs. Contribute to initiatives focused on plant reliability, efficiency, and energy conservation. Maintain a professional and customer-focused approach in all interactions.

Qualifications

Required

Valid Manitoba 3rd Class Power Engineer Certificate. Minimum 2 years of experience operating and maintaining boiler plant equipment in an industrial, institutional, district energy, or commercial environment.

Working knowledge of

High-pressure steam systems Boilers and auxiliary equipment Water treatment systems Pumps, valves, and heat exchangers Plant operating procedures and safety practices Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, operating procedures, and technical documentation. Proficiency with computer-based maintenance and operating systems. Valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver's License.

Preferred

Experience in a central heating plant or district energy facility. Experience with computerized control systems, DCS, or SCADA platforms. Knowledge of steam distribution and condensate return systems. WHMIS, First Aid/CPR, Confined Space Entry, and Lockout/Tagout training. Experience with CMMS software.

Physical Requirements

Ability to work in an industrial plant environment. Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and access elevated equipment. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (23 kg). Ability to work around heat, noise, vibration, and rotating equipment while wearing required PPE. Capable of performing extended walking and equipment inspections throughout the facility.
