Job Description:
The Student, Indigenous Patient Services role aligns with strategic direction from Ontario Health’s First Nations, Inuit, Métis, Urban Indigenous (FNIMUI) Strategy, and with the foundational strategic priorities identified in the Letters of Relationship between RVH and Barrie and Area Native Advisory Circle – Indigenous Health Circle (BANAC - IHC).
Under the supervision of the Manager, Indigenous Patient Services, the Student, Indigenous Patient Services will provide support and advocacy for First Nation, Métis, and Inuit patients (in-patient and out-patient care), caregivers and families.
Role Responsibilities:
- Communicate effectively, both written and verbally, when supporting patients, their families and health care teams
- Address cultural/spiritual needs, including leading smudging ceremonies upon request
- Support patients through triage and the admissions process as needed
- Establish therapeutic relationships and complete referrals for patients based on their personal and health needs
- Advocate for patients and their families when barriers arise to ensure quality and timeliness of treatment
- Assist patients to better understand hospital services
Qualifications:
- Enrolled in post-secondary education in a health science, social science or Indigenous studies (or culturally recognized equivalent)
- Lived experience within an Indigenous community, combined with knowledge of Indigenous cultural practices including the ability to perform a smudging ceremony
- Experience and understanding of First Nation, Métis and Inuit history, culture, health determinants, and perspectives on health and well-being
- Demonstrate excellence in self-management, attention to detail, ability to prioritize multiple tasks, and perform duties without supervision
- Excellent computer skills with an ability to review and document patient records in a timely and accurate manner
- Ability to correctly make decisions involving client issues/problems including when to escalate the problem to a more senior member of the team
- High attention to detail and data accuracy with strict adherence to policies and handling of confidential information
- Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, including tact, diplomacy, sensitivity and patience
- Ability to effectively learn and acquire new knowledge and skills
- Demonstrate excellence in communication skills, both verbal and written
Work Schedule:
- The successful candidate will work two to three 4-hour evening shifts weekly and two 8-hour weekend day shifts (every other weekend) on site at RVH
- Some travel between RVH locations may be required
About Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre
Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, located in Barrie, Ontario, provides safe, high-quality care for residents across a large geographical region including Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka. The area is home to more than 450,000 residents, with half of RVH’s patients living outside the City of Barrie.
As the largest health centre in North Simcoe Muskoka, RVH provides highly specialized services, and technology not found anywhere else in the region. This includes the only interventional radiology suites for minimally invasive surgeries, vascular services, advanced stroke care, as well as dedicated trauma rooms in its large Emergency department. RVH is also home to the Hudson Regional Cancer Centre, Simcoe Muskoka Regional Heart Program, Simcoe Muskoka Regional Child and Youth Program and the RVH Regional Renal Program meaning distance is no longer a factor for residents receiving lifesaving treatment.
