Job Description Position Purpose Summary: The purpose of the expectation task list is to identify and clarify what management expects from the incumbent. This task list indicates the general nature and level of work expected of the incumbent and is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities. The following expectations and tasks will be part of the annual performance appraisals; merit increases will be based on the level of performance in each of the following areas. Other job-related duties may be assigned by the employer.
Expectations may change year to year and both parties should use the annual performance appraisal to determine realistic and equitable goals and outcomes for the upcoming performance year.
The Community and Family Services worker’s role is to assist families who are seeking aid and emergency assistance from/or have been referred to as the Ottawa Booth Centre Community and Family Services. This includes ensuring the emergency food bank and clothing services are well stocked and organized with needed items as required.
Accountabilities Food Bank
- Receive and sort products as they arrive in the Centre
- Move products from different locations in the Centre as space becomes available in the Food Bank and stock shelves as necessary
- Ensure all food items are fresh and remove any items which may become stale-dated
- Pack upwards of 60-70 grocery bins daily
- Transfer full grocery bags from Food Bank to CFS office and then to clients
- Responsible for the organization, maintenance and general cleanliness of the food bank
- Ensure tracking of daily produce provided is completed daily
- Organize produce shelving during client services while replenishing inventory as required
Clothing Services
- Receive and sort products on a bi-weekly basis
- Sort items that should be discarded or donated to thrift store
- Organize shelving and bins ensuring inventory cages are organized
- Responsible for organizations and planning of client distribution
- Clean up at the end of service days and storing items appropriately in their designated locations
Client Services

Verify client needs and ensure they meet eligibility criteria

Obtain appropriate documentation and signed release forms as required under the Privacy-related legislation (latest revision)

Identify and asses client needs, considering the whole person/family unit including practical, emotional and spiritual needs

Provide written and verbal referrals to other agencies and workers when appropriate
-
Deliver services in accordance with established protocols; this includes, but is not limited to:
-
Issue emergency food bags, clothing, household and other practical supports needed

Make recommendations for financial assistance
-
Provide information regarding other appropriate services provided by the Ottawa Booth Centre, including spiritual care services

Provide services and follow-up support to emergency response victims as required.

Responsible for ensuring the CFS office is welcoming while ensuring that clients maintain their dignity
Administration
- Input client information in The Salvation Army TSA Link2Feed, Ottawa Food Bank Link2feed database and Excel system
- Maintain complete, accurate, up to date documentation in case files
- Maintain accurate and up to date statistics;
- Prepare all necessary forms and letters relating to CFS emergency assistance
- Assist with seasonal programs, projects and services
- Provide relief reception duties as necessary
- Complete necessary correspondence by calls, email or in person inquiries as they arise
Community Liaison
- Network with community partners, including other Salvation Army units, who are referral agencies and/or sources of assistance for clients
- Attend community meetings as requested by the Manager of Community and Family Services
- Ongoing collaboration with Salvation Army Thrift Stores with support, services and donations
Health and Safety
- Adheres to all health and safety policies and procedures in place; comply with all instructions from the employer concerning health and safety as per the Occupational Health and Safety Act and WSIB
- Ensures all procedures, rules and guidelines for the safety and security of clients and staff are enforced and respected
Working Conditions
- May deal with angry and abusive clients
- May encounter verbal abuse
The above responsibilities must be discharged in accordance with The Salvation Army’s Mission Statement, in a professional manner, exemplifying Christian standards of conduct. Education, Experience Qualifications And Certifications
- Relevant community college/university education in social services or related disciplines
- Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
Experience And Skilled Knowledge Requirements
- Minimum two years’ experience working with a similar disadvantaged client population in an urban setting, effectively identifying and assessing their individual needs
- Experience in working cooperatively with community resource agencies, particularly in negotiating and advocating for client’s needs
Skills And Capabilities (examples Provided Below)
- Strong written documentation and correspondence skills
- Strong computer skills, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Must be able to lift and move up to 30 pounds unassisted
- Must be able to endure physical activity for long periods
- Valid 'G' driver’s license is required
- Provide clean driver’s abstract
- Bilingualism preferred (English and French)
- Provide a current, clear police background check for the vulnerable sector
- Hours Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
- On-site work
- Temporary contract position until January 23, 2026
Compensation The target hiring range for this position is $20.25 to $25.31 with a maximum of $30.37.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
