Term Instructor and Head Athletic Therapist

The Department of Kinesiology and Applied Health at The University of Winnipeg invites applications for a one-year term appointment in Athletic Therapy at the rank of Instructor/Athletic Therapist. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, and in accordance with The University of Winnipeg Faculty Association Collective Agreement (2020-2027). Subject to budgetary approval, the date of appointment is anticipated to be July 1, 2026.

Candidates must hold a Master’s degree in Athletic Therapy, Kinesiology, or a related discipline, and be certified and in good standing with the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA) and the Manitoba Athletic Therapists Association (MATA). Candidates should have a minimum of two years of experience as a practicing athletic therapist and previous experience working with athletic teams as well as the general public.

The successful candidate will serve as the Head Athletic Therapist in charge of the management of the Athletic Therapy Clinic at The University of Winnipeg. As the Head Athletic Therapist, they will be charged with the prevention and care of athletic injuries for Wesmen Athletics, and members of the public, where time permits.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • coordinating, collecting and reviewing preseason medical screening questionnaires and Physician Examination forms;
  • providing in-person Clean Sport education at Wesmen orientation;
  • maintaining Canada-West medical standards for all USport competition coverage;
  • pre-practice and game preparation (e.g. taping);
  • practice and game coverage (including evenings and weekends);
  • injury assessment;
  • appropriate referral, if necessary;
  • injury rehabilitation;
  • return to sport decisions;
  • communicating with Wesmen Head Coaches and strength and conditioning coaches about athlete clearance status using the Privit app and/or other means of communication (i.e. Teams);
  • manage the Athletic Therapy budget, resources and staff, including the Office Assistant, Sport Medicine Physician and Contract Athletic Therapy Staff;
  • coordination, supervision, and mentoring of Athletic Therapy students enrolled in practicum courses;
  • attending Canada-West Medical meetings (2x per year- one online and one in-person);
  • performing other duties and functions related to this job description not exceeding above stated skills and capabilities.

The candidate will also teach 1-2 undergraduate courses that support the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Health’s Bachelor of Kinesiology and Bachelor of Science (Athletic Therapy) degrees, including undergraduate courses in musculoskeletal anatomy and/or clinical athletic therapy courses. The final workload division between teaching, Head Athletic Therapist duties, and clinic management responsibilities will be determined in consultation with the candidate, the Dean of the Gupta Faculty of Kinesiology and Applied Health, and the Director of Athletics.

The successful candidate will possess the following competencies:

  • good administrative skills;
  • strong oral and written communication skills;
  • ability to apply clinical experience across diverse patient populations;
  • able to communicate confidently with Wesmen athletes, coaches, and administrators;
  • able to coordinate and communicate with members of the Wesmen Athletics’ medical support staff;
  • sound computer skills and able to become familiar with Clinic Master, Privit, and Wibbi platforms;
  • Personal Health Information Act (PHIA) certified and compliant with patient confidentiality requirements.
