Location - This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.
Under the Vice-President-Research and Innovation (VPRI), North Campus Animal Services (NCAS) provides research support services for the University of Alberta (UA). NCAS supports over 150 principal investigator groups under the guidelines from the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC). NCAS supports the UA research community through effective, comprehensive services ranging from researcher training, animal procurement, transport services, high quality animal health care, and provision of bio-secure animal caging supplies/equipment. The VPRI team supports and advances the university's large and complex research and innovation enterprise, providing leadership, guidance and diverse research services.
The Vice-President - Research and Innovation portfolio is responsible for enabling and overseeing the full spectrum of research administration at the University of Alberta. This includes providing pre- and post-award support, ensuring financial accountability, ensuring compliance with funding agency policies, and maintaining long-term stewardship of research funds.
Accountability for research administration is shared among colleges and faculties, necessitating strong collaboration between institutional leadership, academic units, and individual researchers. The portfolio plays a central role in aligning administrative systems, policies, and procedures to ensure both university and external requirements are met.
Through strategic partnerships, governance, and service, the Vice-President - Research and Innovation advances a research environment that supports excellence, drives innovation, and strengthens the university’s reputation as a world-class research institution.
The Logistic Management Assistant (LMA) support the University’s research mission by providing significant expertise to support animal care and use. As a key member of an integrated research support team, this role supports research by providing support services related to clean/appropriate cage systems and supplies, biological monitoring/control and well-maintained facilities.
The duties of the LMA are various and multifaceted, and require significant team work in a high volume fast-paced environment. Support of animal research requires detailed knowledge of current SOP’s, University policy and procedures and the CCAC guidelines.

Successful completion of Grade 12 High School Diploma (or GED) PLUS a minimum of 5 years basic driving and 2 years delivery experience in larger vehicles (I.E. 1/3/5 tonne van/truck), is required.

Must possess and maintain a clean, valid (on-going) Alberta Class 5 Operator’s License and must successfully complete a Canada Safety Council Defensive Driving Course and the University of Alberta’s Driver Evaluation.

Must provide a Driver’s Abstract to verify possession of a valid Operator’s License and a clean driving record prior to hire and upon request for validation by the FSL.

Must pass the UofA Fleet Safety Driver’s Evaluation and maintain the UofA Authorized Driver status (minimum age of 19) within the first 3 months in the position.

Within 6 (six) months of hire, must successfully complete (and maintain thereafter) required on-the-job / in-house training:
- Part 1 Animal Ethics
- Part 2 Animal Handling for Mice, Rats and Swine
- Other job-specific tasks such as understanding the principles of infection, fomite control and decontamination, and incinerator operation/maintenance
- WHMIS Certification
- TDG (Transportation of Dangerous Good) Certification

Must have working knowledge and meet (or exceed) the minimum requirements and responsibilities as specified in UAPPOL:
- “Vehicle Management and Driver Safety” Policy
- “Driver Authorization Procedure”

Ability to operate equipment (i.e. Pallet jack, power jack, 2-4-6 wheel carts).

In light of its constantly changing, physical environment, vehicle operations require extensive current understanding of the campus community as well as knowledge of its Departments/Faculty locations and their respective delivery points.

Working knowledge of general office equipment and computers including MS Office, Google Applications and/or in-house software, as required.

This position required intensive visual concentration.

Professional demeanor and positive, well-developed interpersonal and communication skills.

Strong organizational and time management skills with demonstrated problem-solving and multi-tasking abilities.

Background in small hand tool use and minor equipment set up and repair is an asset.
