Compensation and Benefits

Salary: $81,288 - $86,712 (Annual Gross) | $41.69 - $44.47 per hour

Supplemental Pay Types:

o Salary premium for Gas Fitting Ticket (B) of $1.75 per hour

o Opportunity for OT at Double Time (bankable for additional time off)

o Evening/Weekend shift premiums when applicable

Schedule:

o Working nine day-shifts (6:37am to 3:30pm) over a two-week period

§ Every second Friday or Monday off

Vacation Allotments:

o Year 1: 1.25 vacation days earned per month

o Year 2: Three weeks of vacation

o Year 5: Four weeks of vacation

o Year 8: Five weeks of vacation

o Year 14-18: One additional day of vacation earned per year

o Year 18: Six weeks of vacation

o Every year: Three additional vacation days between Christmas and New Years

University Pension Contributions:

o 9.4% of your gross pensionable earnings (basic salary). Read more

Job Description Summary

Steamfitters perform skilled steam fitting/pipefitting work at the journeyperson level in the planning, layout, assembly, installation, maintenance, repair and renovation work of building steam and hot water heating systems, chilled water systems, high and low pressure steam lines and equipment throughout the University.

Organizational Status

Steamfitters report to Manager, Thermal Utilities Steamfitters work both independently as well as with other Steamfitters and associated tradespeople, both at the apprentice and journeyperson level. Steamfitters receive daily work assignments and directions from the Head Steamfitter as well as the Sub Head Steamfitter.

Work Performed

  • Duties required in the Steamfitting trade following recognized procedures and techniques for such work:
  • Installing, maintaining, repairing and renovating building steam and hot water heating systems, chilled water systems and high and low pressure steam lines and equipment
  • Handling asbestos or other hazardous insulation materials
  • Repairing machinery and equipment through inspection tests
  • Diagnosing defects in equipment

Assembling parts, equipment, fittings and joining them by soldering, brazing, gluing, screwing,calking, bolting and other methods

  • Working from oral and written instructions, work orders and drawings

  • Responding to trouble calls and emergencies during normal working hours and after working hours in a safe efficient manner

  • Working in correct and safe manner and following safe work practices

  • Attending required schooling as per ITA BC schedule and ensuring work is carried out to achieve passing grades and performing other related tasks

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Work is performed within prescribed and accepted trade standards, in accordance with job requirements and specifications and external regulatory requirements; inappropriate repair/maintenance decisions could delay resolution of problems and adversely affect users of equipment/system and possible safety of users and the general public.

Supervision Received

Works under the general supervision of the Head and Sub Head Steamfitter as well as Journeymen. Steamfitters are required to develop appropriate work procedures and methods of problem solving. May receive specific instructions on unusual problems and may be required to develop appropriate work procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

A trade certification to journeyperson level as a Steamfitter, valid BC Gas Fitter B License with electrical endorsement for low voltage, BC Cross Connection Control certificate and Valid BC Drivers Licence.As per ITA BC: Grade 12 or equivalent, English 12, Algebra 11 or Trade Math 11, Physics 11 or Science & Technology 11. Must be willing to take and pass the BCIT Trades Apprentice Pre-Test.

Preference for completion of relevant coursework such as but not limited to piping trades programs at a recognized technical institution, piping foundations as well as pre-apprenticeship programs.

Preference for piping trades experience or training and general construction experience.Minimum 5 years of related experience.Relevant work experience such as piping, plumbing or sprinkler system installation preferred. A working knowledge of relevant industrial safety regulations. Effective oral and written communication, organizational and problem solving skills. Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. Ability to provide quality service to customers in a courteous, patient manner. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships. Ability to work various shift patterns dependent upon operational needs. Ability to work in confined spaces and areas with elevated temperatures. Basic ability to use a smartphone, tablet and PC.
