Scope
Reporting to the Trees & Landscape Manager, this is a complex, professional position requiring considerable expertise to review land development applications and provide guidance to both staff, and consultants and the public. The Environmental Coordinator will be a part of a team that establishes and implements realistic objectives and standards related to urban forestry and the environment while delivering on Surrey’s action plan.
Responsibilities
Reviews and processes high-profile, complex development applications and environmental and technical reports and projects, ensuring compliance with regulations, bylaws and policies, and terms of references.
Assists in preparation and implementation of policies, terms of references, guidance and bylaw amendments in support of streamlining permit approval processes.
Liaise with other departments, consultants, municipalities, governmental agencies, community and environmental groups.
Assists with oversight and review of environmental assessments completed through community planning programs.
Responds to enquiries from a variety of stakeholders.
Provides guidance, and training to staff and external agents.
Respond to inquiries and emergencies related but not limited to pollution events, fisheries, wildlife, water quality, and stream and habitat protection.
Strategically advances the development of policies and programs that support environmental strategies and policies.
Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
A University degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a related discipline and a minimum of eight (8) years¿ experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
A valid and unrestricted driver's license with a safe driving record.
Registered as a Professional Biologist (R.P. Bio) or Professional Agrologist (P.Ag).
Directly related experience with a municipality or other public sector organization is considered an asset.
