SHAFT AREA SUPERINTENDENT, Phase 3+ Expansion Project Reporting to Island Gold’s Shaft Area Project Manager, the Shaft Area Superintendent will be involved with construction of a new shaft, heavy civil construction, and commissioning.

The Phase 3+ Expansion of Island Gold to a production rate of 2,400 tpd from the current rate of approximately 1,200 tpd will involve various infrastructure investments. These include the development of a shaft and related facilities, paste backfill plant, mine water treatment facilities, an expansion of the process plant and tailings facility, and power supply upgrades. Following the completion of the shaft in 2026, the operation will transition from trucking to skipping ore and waste to surface through the new shaft infrastructure, driving production higher and unit costs significantly lower.

The successful candidate will have broad experience of construction, procurement, shaft sinking, surface and underground construction, and commissioning. The successful candidate will participate in procurement, managing a shaft sinking contractor, commissioning, operational readiness, and handover of the Shaft Area facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in and manage various aspects of the Phase 3+ Expansion Project including, but not limited to:

  • Contributing to safe construction and field coordination of the following Shaft Area facilities:

  • Shaft

  • Bin House

  • Loading Pocket

  • Water Handling Facility

  • Administration Building & Dry Complex

  • Participate, by reviewing and approving JHA’s, procedures and work plans to safely execute all work.

  • Ensure the highest standards of housekeeping are always maintained.

  • Ensure excellent communications are always carried out by communicating effectively with trades people and technical personnel.

  • Providing supervision, technical and safety leadership for the Shaft Area construction team.

  • Reviewing, understanding, and implementing the terms of the relevant project contracts.

  • Ongoing oversight of the shaft sinking process, including:

  • Tracking of advance rates

  • Participating in the contractor performance management / continuous improvements to ensure safe and consistent shaft sinking & equipping efforts

  • Facilitate and coordinate various activities such as concrete, explosives and other owner supplied consumables management, geological / geotechnical mapping, headframe changeover, equipping, ventilation management etc.

  • Participation in the development of construction scopes and material supply Request for Proposal (RFP) packages and subsequent award decisions.

  • Field coordination requirements to ensure various contractors on site execute successfully.

  • Field inspection of shaft and surface construction work fronts.

  • Monitor contractor’s daily labour, equipment, and material usage.

  • Monitor and identify Quality issues during construction

  • System Commissioning

  • Operational Readiness

  • Managing construction interfaces between multiple contractors

This position is based at the Island Gold site working on a rotation schedule of 7 days on site followed by 7 days at home, subject to change as the project requires. Flights are available from the Greater Toronto Area (Signature Aviation), Sudbury, Thunder Bay, and Rouyn- Noranda, QC.

Experience Preferred

  • Extensive experience in hard rock shaft and heavy civil construction.
  • Lead by example by demonstrating leadership abilities, a high level of energy, self-motivation, integrity, and strong organizational skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • 10+ years of experience in construction and contractor management
