Title of position: Volunteer with First Words program
Location: Main PQ site (1365 Richmond Road)
Supervisors: Gillian Purdy and Jennifer Kiesewalter
Hours: To be determined (during weekdays only)

Volunteers
At PQCHC, volunteers and staff are considered partners and work in collaboration to uphold the Centre’s principles, values, and mission. They contribute unique knowledge; experiences and skills that help PQCHC to better connect with Ottawa’s west end community, reflect its diversity and serve its specific needs.
Volunteer recruitment is a continuous process at PQ. We thank you for the amazing engagement we receive in all volunteer applications. However, due to the volume of applications, not all applicants will be contacted. If you are selected to be screened, the volunteer coordinator will reach out to you to discuss this posting.
First Words
First Words offers free preschool speech and language services to children ages 0 to school eligibility living in Ottawa and Renfrew County.
Volunteer Summary
The Volunteer with First Words will support staff running the program. This will include providing some administrative support, helping develop materials, and keeping the space clean and tidy.
Responsibilities:
- Creating materials for children and families
- Photocopying
- Supporting a speech and language group with set-up and clean-up
- Printing and laminating resources
- Cleaning toys
Qualifications:
Working on an undergraduate degree with plans to continue with a degree in Speech Language Pathology or Communication Disorders Assistant Program.
All volunteers must go through screening, onboarding, and training through Human Resources (HR). A Police Record Check (level 1) is required for volunteering with First Words. HR will provide a letter to support your request for a check.

Founded by community members in 1979, we are one of about 60 non-profit community health centers across Ontario. We are run by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of 12 community members elected at our annual meeting.
Growing With Our Community:
In 1979 we opened our doors with 4 staff. Today, we have over 347 full and part time employees serving our local community and over 400 volunteers.

We work in partnership with individuals, families and communities to achieve their full potential, paying particular attention to those who are most vulnerable and at risk. We offer services in both official languages in designated programs.
