About the role

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Canadian Mental Health Association BC Division is seeking 3 Parent Support Coaches to join our Confident Parent Thriving Kids (CPTK) Behavior Program in Vancouver.
Coaches will be trained in the PMTO model initially individual and group delivery model. Will receive ongoing reflective coaching, supervision and support to achieve certification over a period of 12+ months. The program is delivered telephonically and through videoconferences to ensure access to parents across BC, including those who may not have access to support in their region. This is an early intervention program.
Coaches teach parents family management practices which support social skills and cooperation in the child and help to prevent, reduce or reverse behaviour issues.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

The Parent Management Training – Oregon Model (PMTO) is an empirically supported treatment program originally developed by the Implementation Sciences International Incorporated and adapted by CMHA, BC Division. It has been proven to promote healthy child development and reduce moderate behavioural problems. Through structured sessions parents, grandparents and foster parents are empowered to become the primary treatment agents for the child.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties and responsibilities associated with this position are described below. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list.

  • Provides phone or virtual support services to assigned clients (i.e. caregivers) at a time that is convenient for the parent both in the individual and group setting.

  • Participates actively in PMTO training to achieve and sustain certification (see below)

  • Receives extensive training both in individual and group delivery.

  • Offers sophisticated clinical practices to build therapeutic alliance and provide a supportive environment for change for caregivers.

  • Maintains a caseload of individual and/or group clients once fully trained.

  • Committed to professional growth under supervision.

  • Will adhere to ethical standards of practice for counselors/social workers/psychologists.

  • Responsible for comprehensive case management & reporting.

  • Maintains client records with adequate and accurate documentation in a timely manner.

  • Ensures data is documented on an ongoing basis and reported accurately.

  • Participates actively in training, meetings, and consultations.

  • Ensures ongoing compliance with privacy policies.

  • Responsible for completing PMTO certification.

  • Participates actively in comprehensive, multi-phased training in PMTO (Parent Management Training - the Oregon Model).

  • Assists clients using best practices of group work techniques. Practitioners will use PMTO individual and group model specific curriculums.

  • Follows and provides a unique comprehensive approach to parental group for children ages 3-12 with behaviour difficulties.

  • Incorporates any feedback or direction received through written reflections, individual or team reflective coaching sessions.

  • Demonstrates curiosity, openness to new ideas, and flexibility in thinking.

  • Holds value of growth and ongoing learning dedication to ensure fidelity to the model and eager to participate in a demanding learning environment; participate in all scheduled workshops and training sessions.

  • Responsible for recording sessions for quality assurance and commitment to strength-based approach.

  • Encourages the development of parenting skills through strength-based approaches; researches evidence-based practices.

  • Provides active teaching that includes modeling, role play and other experiential exercises as opportunity for practice for caregivers.

  • Places an emphasis on eliciting goal behaviors from caregivers using coaching skills rather than direct teaching.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in social work, Child and Youth Care, Psychology, Counseling or related discipline. An equivalent combination of professional experience and education (e.g. certificates, diplomas, etc.) may be considered.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of public health, health education, and health literacy, particularly in multiple settings or with various populations.

  • Knowledge and experience with culturally competent practice.

  • Knowledge of community outreach.

  • Knowledge of the mental health and addictions system in BC.

  • Knowledge of specialized and personal computer systems and databases, Internet, and software applications, particularly Microsoft Office.

Required attributes and skills

  • At least three years’ experience in child and family services.

  • Ability to work flexible hours as required by parents and primary caregivers (including grandparents and foster parents). This includes working regular evenings and weekends.

  • Strong organization and time management skills.

  • Non-judgmental, flexible and committed to working with parents and primary caregivers (including grandparents and foster parents) in challenging circumstances.

  • Demonstrated group facilitation skills.

  • Able to adopt new intervention strategies, willingness to have work recorded.

  • Team-oriented: collaborative and supportive of colleagues

Preferred attributes and skills

  • Comfortable in working with a specific model of service with defined, prescribed parameters.

  • Comfortable and knowledgeable about integral behavioral approaches, understands mindfulness and cognitive therapy approaches.

  • Trauma informed practice.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a temporary term position ending March 31, 2027, or upon the incumbent’s return.

  • This position is based out of the CMHA BC Vancouver office. A combination of working from home and working from office is required.

  • This position is 37.5 hours per week.

  • Coaches will be required to work evenings and weekends work on a regular basis. This position is dependent on continued funding.

  • This is a unionized position with Health Science Professionals Bargaining Association, and the hourly rate is $42.27-$52.68
