Student Clinical Extern (Occupational Therapy)

About the role

Position Overview

The Occupational Therapy Extern works in collaboration with and under the direct and/or indirect supervision of an appointed regulated healthcare professional and under the mentorship of a Clinical Extern Coordinator to provide quality and safe patient care. OT Clinical externs can also shadow occupational therapists across various departments tailored to their interests, offering a well-rounded experience.

Under supervision, you’ll perform essential patient care duties, contribute to accurate clinical documentation, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals in a team-based environment. This contract role includes comprehensive orientation, ongoing support, and the chance to work in a patient- and family-centered environment. You’ll practice safe, evidence-based care, document patient data, assist with assessments, and advocate for culturally competent, respectful care. As an Occupational Therapy Student Extern, you are required to work minimum of 1 shift per 3-week period, and can work to a maximum of 75 hours bi-weekly.

Education

  • Applicants must be enrolled in any year of study in a training program accredited by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (COAT)
  • Must hold a current BLS Certificate

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and other relevant legislation
  • Knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
  • Knowledge of Emergency Codes
  • Ability to work in a job that requires lifting, considerable walking, and standing, bending, pushing and pulling of equipment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of infection control practices
  • Demonstrated ability to foster caring and trusting relationships with patients and families in an effort to support patient focused care
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude and the willingness to work effectively in a team
  • Demonstrated commitment to on-going learning and professional development
  • Ability to maintain a consistent level of productivity and efficiency
  • Ability to ask questions and seek out assistance when unsure of how to proceed with a task that is unfamiliar
  • Ability to perform responsibilities in a courteous manner
  • Compliance with confidentiality requirements under the MGH Privacy Policy
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Patient service-oriented, with the ability to effectively work in a diverse and inclusive environment
  • Good work and attendance record is required.
