Court Security provides security services as assigned within the Courts of Saskatchewan to ensure a safe and secure yet open environment for all users of court facilities. This includes secure prisoner transport, the operation of detention areas within court facilities, conducting perimeter screening in accordance with the Court Security Act, 2007, the maintenance of good order in all areas of court facilities, and the assessment and management of threats to courts and court participants. The duties performed by the Deputy Sheriff Supervisor of Court Security are an integral component of the administration of the court and in achieving the goals and objectives of the Court Services Branch.

As a Deputy Sheriff Supervisor, you will be supervising a diverse group of deputy sheriffs. You will assign work to the deputy sheriffs and ensure it meets established performance standards by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring and appraising job results; coaching and counseling employees; and maintaining compliance with the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, and established policies and procedures.

As a Deputy Sheriff Supervisor, you will also be involved in resolving personnel matters by analyzing data, investigating issues, identifying solutions and recommending action. In addition, you will respond to complaints and concerns from prisoners, the public, Court House staff and the Judiciary regarding Court Security operations.

As a Deputy Sheriff Supervisor, you are designated as a Peace Officer operating under the Criminal Code of Canada, the Court Officials Act, 2012, and the Court Security Act, 2007. You will be armed with force option tools and may be required to use necessary force while performing your duties to protect people from harm.

Prior to being hired to work as a Supervisor, any candidate not currently working as a Deputy Sheriff for the Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety, will be required to:

  • produce a current certificate in Standard First Aid/CPR at the time of interview;

  • produce a valid unrestricted class 5 driver's license at the time of interview;

  • produce a driver abstract obtained within the previous 3 months which demonstrates a safe and responsible driving record, at the time of interview;

  • successfully pass a psychological assessment based on the Minnesota Multi-phasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2); and

  • successfully pass SOPAT (Sheriff Officer Physical Abilities Test) with an elapsed time of six (6) minutes or less.

    The successful candidate will be required to obtain enhanced fingerprint clearance. This check is a more in-depth level of clearance than a normal criminal record check.

During the probation period the successful candidate will be required to meet the following criteria (if not already completed):

  • completion of firearms training according to the Provincial firearms standard applied to municipal police recruits, administered by firearms instructors certified by the Saskatchewan Police College;
  • completion of self-defense training according to the standard of Pressure Point Control Tactics (PPCT); and
  • completion of Deputy Sheriff Recruit Training or recognized equivalent training.

Typically, the knowledge and skills required for this position are obtained through several years of relevant work experience within the justice system, law enforcement, or court/legal-related environment.
