Registered Nurse, Clinical Scholar (ICU)

DEPARTMENT:

Nursing Professional Practice

CONDITIONS:

Temporary Full Time for approximately five (5) months

HOURS:

Approximately 75.0 Bi-weekly Hours

SHIFTS:

Days / Evenings / Weekend

7.5 or 11.25 hours per shift (subject to change)

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting directly to the Health Human Resource (HHR) Program Coordinator under Nursing Professional Practice, the primary purpose of the RN Clinical Scholar is to mentor nurses, help build/assess their clinical expertise and support successful transition, integration, and retention within the nursing workforce. Clinical Scholar support will focus on nurses seeking upskills and transition into selected specialty areas. A Clinical Scholar will work in a supernumerary role and must be an experienced nurse with frontline practice.

The RN Clinical Scholar will work closely with the Nurse Educator, in the ICU to identify support needs and build a positive learning mentorship-professional practice environment. The role serves as an added layer of support allowing Clinical Scholars to provide on-unit support and mentorship guidance by facilitating in-the-moment best practice education with respect to both clinical and non-clinical skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure the delivery of professional nursing care by utilizing evidence-based practice
  • Providing guidance, constructive feedback, and mentorship in a meaningful way to nurses performing clinical skills
  • Through coaching and mentorship, assist the nurse in establishing, providing, and evaluating care to patients and families.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the delivery of nursing care, in collaboration with other team members of the leadership teams
  • Providing appropriate learning experiences for new nurses congruent with their level of experience and learning needs
  • Demonstrating critical thinking in the nursing process while collecting and interpreting data, planning, implementing, and evaluating all aspects of nursing care.
  • Practicing to the full scope of practice of the Registered Practical Nurse on Medicine and Surgical units to coach or support new nurses towards evolving their own safe, independent nursing practice
  • Has the knowledge, skill and judgment needed to guide competent, evidence-based nursing practice that complies with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) Standards of Practice, QCH Policies and Procedures as well as the standards of care appropriate to the applicants are of clinical practice
  • Guiding new nurses in developing their ability to critically think and be self-reliant
  • Demonstrate QCH values: collaboration, accountability, innovation, and respect.
  • Other duties as required

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of recent frontline clinical nursing experience, with the most recent two (2) years in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) setting
  • Current BCLS certification
  • Competencies to provide training and mentorship
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively within the nursing and inter-professional teams
  • Demonstrated computer competency (MS Office Suite, Meditech) Previous experience teaching, working with clinical learners and/or precepting
  • Experience with Elsevier

PREFERRED:

  • Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Medical-Surgical Certification
  • Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Critical Care Certification
  • Experience as a preceptor/mentor
  • Experience with clinical documentation in an Electronic Health Record
