Job Description

Postdoctoral Fellowship
Studying Human-AI Collaborative Systems

Overview

Dr. Swati Mishra from the Department of Computing and Software (CAS) is recruiting one (1) postdoctoral researcher for her interdisciplinary lab, the Machine Teaching and Human Intelligence Research Group at McMaster University.

We are focused on developing human-centered AI systems that assist with analysis and decision-making using complex unstructured datasets, including text and images. The postdoctoral project will explore cognitive models of human-AI collaboration within data-driven workflows, such as reading and writing data-driven narratives, designing interactive visualizations to communicate insights, and documenting personal experiences. This research aims to build mechanisms that help individuals interpret AI decisions and establish appropriate levels of reliance on AI in human-AI collaborative systems.

One motivation behind this research is that while AI tools help to increase the speed with which we analyze unstructured datasets and synthesize narratives, they often limit individual expression and creativity. Furthermore, these tools also introduce unintended biases and homogenization effects among their users, degrading the quality of the data stories produced using AI. This project aims at designing techniques that can mitigate these negative impacts of AI use and improve the process and outcome of human-AI collaboration in data-driven workflows.

Qualifications

The candidate must have and/or demonstrate the following skillset:

  • PhD in Computer Science / Information Science or related fields
  • Strong background in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) / Psychology / Cognitive Science / Interaction Design
  • Experience with Data Science and Machine Learning software tools (e.g., TensorFlow, Keras, Cloud Computing)
  • Experience with programming languages (e.g., Python) and software design
  • Experience with conducting human subject evaluations and a strong understanding of
  • qualitative methods and statistical techniques

Duration and Funding

The term of the fellowship is initially for 12 months. Selection will be based upon the candidate's research potential and fit with the research group in the Department of CAS at the Faculty of Engineering. We prefer the start date of the Postdoctoral Fellowship to be October 1, 2025.

The successful applicant will be placed on a hybrid work arrangement, as agreed upon with the faculty supervisor. The annual salary is $55,000.00 CAD/year, with benefits, provided in accordance with McMaster University guidelines, and commensurate with experience. The normal hours of work are 35 hours per week.

How To Apply

To apply, please send your CV, a letter summarizing your research interests (up to 2 pages), email addresses of up to three references, and one example of a recent publication.

Send the full application package online via Mosaic by the posting closing date. Start date is as soon as possible but flexible and will be determined by the faculty supervisor in consultation with the successful applicant.

We appreciate all replies to this advertisement, but only applicants under consideration will be contacted.
