Position Summary

The Facility Operator performs work related to the day-to-day operation and maintenance of recreational facilities, including arenas, community centres, fire halls, parks, trails, gardens, grounds and playfields. This position works in a team environment alongside other operators, part time staff and contractors to ensure proper operation and maintenance of the above facilities.

Responsibilities

Facility Maintenance

  • Performs work related to the day-to-day operation and maintenance of recreational facilities such as arenas, community centres and fire halls
  • Monitors the arena refrigeration plants, and performs basic repairs and maintenance.
  • Provides direction to part-time staff such as Facility Attendants, Custodians and Customer Service Representatives.
  • Provides excellent customer service to inquiries from the public and/or co-workers.

Parks and Ground Maintenance

  • Performs work related to the day-to-day operation and maintenance of parks, trails, gardens, grounds and playfields.
  • Plows snow at assigned parking lots.
  • Cuts grass within assigned parks and open spaces.
  • Performs basic repairs, service and maintenance work to park equipment, such as playgrounds.
  • Provides on-shift direction to part-time staff, such as Parks Attendants
  • Interacts and provides customer service to park patrons in a courteous manner.

Other Responsibilities

  • Undertakes other duties as directed by the Operations Supervisor and/or Manager of Community Services as relevant to the position.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • High school diploma plus additional certifications of about one year.

Experience

  • 2-3 years of progressive experience in recreation, facility and/or park operations, including maintenance and repair experience or related experience.
  • Experience in one or more of the following is an asset: small and heavy equipment operation, landscape maintenance equipment operation, landscaping, turf maintenance, construction, and janitorial duties.

Specialized Training & Licences

  • Basic Refrigeration Certificate and Certified Ice Technician (CIT) through the Ontario Recreational Facilities Association and Building Environmental Systems Certificate preferred.
  • Emergency First Aid/CPR or willingness to obtain certification.

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other applicable legislation, standard operating procedures, and perform safe work practices.
  • Strong technical experience and knowledge within facility and park operations, including HVAC, air conditioning and refrigeration, building controls, electrical systems, plumbing, turf and grounds maintenance, and snow removal.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal relations, oral and written communication skills.
  • Computer literacy using Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to work within building automation systems, work order ticketing systems and payroll software (Dayforce).
  • Ability to work independently.

Other Requirements

  • A valid Ontario class G driver’s license in good standing.
  • Criminal Records Check.
  • Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Able to lift 32kg/70lbs (e.g. hockey nets, battery for lift, rink glass).

Hours & Conditions of Work

This position is part-time and hours of work are on a rotational schedule which will include evenings and weekend work.

This Facility Operator’s time is spent predominantly in recreational facilities, community centres, parks and playfields.

Compensation

Middlesex Centre offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive employee benefit plan, including participation in the OMERS pension plan for this position. Compensation for this position is currently $28.30 to $33.69 per hour.

The Municipality is situated at the north, northwest and westerly limits of the City of London, and therefore enjoys both urban and rural amenities.
