About the role

About the Job:

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Recreational Therapist will be responsible for supporting clients in a safe and stable environment as they engage in recreational health and fitness development. They will be responsible for leading and providing guidance on physical health and fitness development, coordinating the day-to-day operations of their assigned area, supporting event planning, and providing consultation to their inter-disciplinary team.

They will operate within a community center and transitional housing program that is focused on providing services to the community and youth between the ages of 16-24 who are at risk of homelessness.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide on-site support and guidance in physical health and fitness program development
  • Conduct needs assessments and provide appropriate personalized interventions
  • Promote healthy living and proper wellbeing for clients and community members
  • Work collaboratively with other staff to set realistic goals which can be achieved through recreational engagement and programming
  • Direct the delivery of therapeutic sessions as well as appropriate floor coverage as necessary
  • Provide occasional counselling support to promote positive health and safe development
  • Act as a role model to facilitate physical, emotional, and intellectual growth
  • Liaise with community support and partners (i.e. mental health and addiction service providers, employers, school, primary care facilitators, and family members)
  • Work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to carry out recovery and support
  • Understand and be able to integrate a philosophy of client-centred care into daily responsibilities
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to quality care and service delivery based on SHIP’s Mission and Values
  • Ensure appropriate records are kept and make sure that statistical information is maintained as per agency standards
  • Adhere to agency Health & Safety programs and the Client Safety Framework
  • Perform additional duties as required/delegated by Management

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in Therapeutic Recreation, Kinesiology, or equivalent
  • +3 years providing Therapeutic Recreation to youth and/or adults
  • Membership as RT with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO)
  • Knowledge of overall wellbeing and safe nutrition
  • Expertise in collaboration with community partners
  • Knowledge of MS Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook)
  • A vehicle, valid driver’s license, and adequate insurance coverage
  • Valid Certification in First Aid & CPR
  • Training in ASIST and CPI

Reporting Function:

The Recreational Therapist will report directly to the Program Manager. They will work with both internal and external partners and will interact with all levels within the organization. They will have no supervisory responsibilities.

They will be a support system, resource, and an advocator for the team and Company.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Shifts are typically from Monday – Friday, 7:30am – 4:00pm or 11:00am – 7:30pm and 1:00pm-9:30pm but may vary depending on client needs
  • Average amount of physical effort is required.
  • Able to sit/stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Able to answer and communicate telephone calls and general computer use
  • Able to lift up to 20lbs (product, documents, etc.)
  • Vehicle travel to sites for community engagement and open doors as required.
