Lives For Literacy (L4L) is a Canadian youth-led nonprofit organization committed to advancing equitable access to education and literacy for marginalized communities. Through research, policy, advocacy, educational resources, and community initiatives, L4L works to remove barriers to learning and empower children and youth to reach their full potential.
As a Volunteer Research Assistant, you will contribute to meaningful projects that support education, literacy, children's rights, and inclusive learning opportunities in Canada and globally. We are seeking passionate, motivated, and detail-oriented youth from across Canada to join us. This volunteer role offers an excellent opportunity to develop research, writing, and analytical skills while contributing to projects that create real-world impact in education.
Volunteers will work closely with L4L's leadership to support ongoing research initiatives, policy development, educational toolkits, reports, advocacy campaigns, and program development.
Position Details
Remote (Must be located in Canada) Commitment: 5–10 hours/week Duration: 6 months (with the possibility of extension) Languages: English and/or French
Who We Are Looking For
We welcome applications from youth across Canada, particularly those who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC), as well as newcomers, refugees, persons with disabilities, and individuals from other equity-deserving communities.
We're looking for individuals who
Are passionate about education, literacy, equity, and social impact. Are currently living in Canada. Are between the ages of 18–30 (encouraged but not required). Have strong research, writing, and critical thinking skills. Possess excellent organizational and time-management abilities. Can work independently while collaborating within a remote team. Have experience using Microsoft Office or Google Workspace. Previous research experience is an asset but not required.
This opportunity is ideal for students, recent graduates, or early-career professionals interested in education, public policy, human rights, social sciences, international development, communications, or related fields.
Responsibilities
Conducting literature reviews and educational research using academic journals, government publications, and reports from organizations such as UNESCO, UNICEF, and Statistics Canada. Researching topics related to literacy, education equity, children's rights, peace education, and inclusive education. Supporting the development of L4L's resources by researching age-appropriate activities, lesson plans, discussion prompts, and evidence-based learning strategies. Identifying children's books, multimedia resources, and educational materials that align with toolkit themes. Assisting with the creation and review of educator guides, student worksheets, and other learning resources. Fact-checking content and ensuring research is accurate, current, and evidence-based. Summarizing research findings into accessible briefs and recommendations. Assisting with monitoring, evaluation, and impact measurement by identifying indicators and reviewing feedback. Supporting grant research, partnership research, and policy analysis as needed. Participating in virtual team meetings and collaborating with fellow volunteers.
