Intermediate Biologist
About the role
Are you passionate about habitat, hunting, and fishing? Are you looking to make a change, seeking a better work/life balance, and the opportunity to apply your skills to managing habitat on over 50,000 acres of conservation land? Alberta Conservation Association (ACA) is looking for a motivated and experienced biologist to join our team. This is a full-time position, focused on habitat projects in ACA’s Land Management Program. The position will be based out of our Central Region, at either our Rocky Mountain House or Cochrane office, but will contribute to conservation programming throughout the province.
Responsibilities And Requirements
The ideal candidate will be keen to apply their background in forestry or range management for the benefit of wildlife and fish populations. Working primarily on projects in the Land Management Program, you will use your vegetation identification skills and understanding of plant ecology to assess habitat conditions and provide input into site management, including the control of invasive species and maintenance/improvement of haying and grazing parcels. You will draw on your expertise to develop detailed management plans that guide activities on ACA-owned sites, as well as contribute to planning and delivery of habitat restoration and enhancement projects. You will be aided in this by an understanding of how natural disturbance has shaped vegetation patterns across the province. Your skills will be used to establish baseline conditions and monitor change over time on conservation sites in forested and grassland ecosystems.
Other tasks that you may be involved with include assessing habitat securement opportunities, negotiating term agreements with landowners to conserve riparian and upland habitat, developing and supervising delivery of contracts, and responding to industrial referrals that impact conservation sites. Reporting to a Project Lead and Regional Manager, you will be required to report on project deliverables, budgets, timelines, and related activities, and will work well in a team environment. Collaborating with a variety of project partners, landowners, and stakeholders will be key to your success. Long field days are common, and you may be required to stay away from home at field camps for portions of the year. In addition, you will be asked to assist with other Wildlife or Fisheries projects as needed.

About Alberta Conservation Association
Conserve, protect and enhance have been part of our DNA since we formed in 1997. Traveling thousands of kilometres in -40C weather tracking wolverines or working to secure spawning habitat for world class brown trout can be a typical day. Pick a project from ACA's fish, wildlife or land resource programs and conservation can be defined knee deep in muskeg, sweat and mosquitoes.
While the core of our work has remained consistent, how we do our work has changed over 25 years—from adopting drones and solar-powered off-site watering technologies to engaging new audiences and creating new opportunities between landowners, municipalities and industry. Its these relationships between stakeholders—the hunters, the anglers and trappers, education and research, the public, corporate partners and landowners—that keeps conservation relevant today.
