About the role

The Principal Specialist, Mechanical Detail Design, applies expertise to act as the organizational authority for a particular discipline on executing design development and approval using the appropriate methods, tools, processes and software. The Principal Specialist, Mechanical Detail Design uses comprehensive knowledge and skills to act independently while guiding and training other designers. The Principal Specialist, Mechanical Detail Design ensures integration of the systems into the ship design, including their fabrication and installation on the ship. The Principal Specialist, Mechanical Detail Design is a key point of contact for the Mechanical discipline within the project and controls cost, schedule, technical completion and integration of defined scope within the disciplines’ grouping of systems or deliverables.

This role is also responsible for liaising with internal and external partner design teams to ensure that the overall ship design is produced in accordance with the current engineering and equipment data information, the applicable rules and regulations, the production design standards and the procedures as assigned by the Department or Discipline Manager or Project Manager.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver, BC V7P 2R2.

What you’ll do

  • Provide comprehensive discipline leadership and supervise the Mechanical and Piping part of the ship’s design. Communicate project team’s issues and critical initiatives to the Department Manager and Project Manager.
  • Allocate design/drafting work (including design review tasks) to team members and ensure that they work within their competencies and with appropriate supervision.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to other designers or subcontractors in the Mechanical and Piping engineering/design area.
  • Provide design expertise in assigned areas of Mechanical and Piping design by preparing and reviewing design and functional packages to ensure functional design requirements are met.
  • Provide subject area expertise to lead design: produce integrated 3D models, based on engineering documentation, class society rules and regulations, flag rules, company and international standards, develop design solutions and prepare detail design production documentation within project schedule and budget.
  • Develop and review design drawings for icebreaking, naval replenishment and different support or multi-purpose vessels to achieve customer approval and Classification Society, flag regulatory compliance.
  • Develop, review and approve material specifications and bills of material in accordance with Seaspan material strategies and customer requirements.
  • Ensure appropriate design methods are used and that appropriate design checks are undertaken.
  • Actively support the company design standards development and improvement process.
  • Identify improvements in subject area processes, tools and training that can offer increased efficiency, responsiveness, and product quality.
  • Provide technical support to production and performs trade studies both formal and informal to determine the most cost-effective solutions to design problems and meet material budgets for systems assigned. Finds opportunities to reduce material and labor costs below budget.
  • Support Planning, Supply Chain and Production to ensure the designed system is complete and functional on schedule to support ship delivery.
  • Support project management with estimation of design scope, both baseline and technical change scope, risk mitigation oversight and enabling products to support installation and build schedule.
  • Progress and cost monitoring and reporting to the project’s management and Department or Discipline Manager.
  • Develop and enforce design disciplines-specific standards.
  • Ensure quality of design products and compliance with specifications.
  • Maintain communication and collaboration with clients, contractors, and other collaborators, as required. Key point of contact for Detail Design Mechanical discipline within the project.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

What you’ll bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Systems, Design or Naval Engineering is required.
  • 5+ years of progressively senior experience in Detailed Design within shipbuilding industry, manufacturing or other heavy industries environment, while working on projects involving diverse partners.
  • Experience working with classification society requirements.
  • Experience working with a diverse integrated project team, develop, supervise and lead people.
  • Knowledge of Marine Mechanical and Piping design, including detailed knowledge of mechanical and piping systems and production best practices.
  • Design knowledge and experience with the following ship types: icebreakers, research vessels, multi-purpose vessels, fishing vessels, naval auxiliary vessels.
  • Demonstrated ability of working independently to develop solutions to sophisticated technical problems. Critical thinker with the ability to analyze change requests, projects, and designs to anticipate schedule or budget risk.
  • High-level analytical skills to gather and analyze/synthesize data, confirming its accuracy and adequacy as an integral part of the collective analysis/synthesis process.
  • Ability to work effectively across a multi-disciplined team.
  • Ability to guide and mentor team members.
  • Strong technical writing skills including the ability to produce and present clear, detailed written technical specifications, procedures, and reports.
  • Knowledge of Materials Requirements Planning (MRP), purchasing and management systems is preferred.
  • Understanding of CADMATIC and AutoCAD software, document control systems and databases.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and shipbuilding CAD systems is required.
  • Good organizational skills, above average communication skills including written, verbal, listening and presentation are required.
  • Availability and willingness to travel to such locations and with such frequency as the employer determines is necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.
  • Committed to a high standard of safety and able to follow all safety laws, regulations and all the employer's safety policies and rules.
  • Exercise good judgments and make decisions in a manner consistent with the crucial job functions.
  • PC proficiency required. Working knowledge of basic Microsoft Office software suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Teams etc.).
  • Must hold or be eligible to attain Reliability Security Clearance or a higher level of Security Clearance as required.

The estimated salary for this position is $143,100 - $159,000. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
