Safety is a cornerstone of our business and a core value that shapes our culture. It drives everything we do, and we’re looking for a passionate HSE Advisor for our Northern and Interior BC Region to champion this mission alongside a dynamic regional operations team.
We provide diverse engineering consulting and geomatics services across a broad range of market sectors for municipal, provincial, general contractors, oil & gas, energy and other clients. Our offices are always bustling, and our field work is dispersed with small teams working in remote, urban, and rural areas.
As the HSE Advisor, you'll be a trusted advisor to Project Managers, Division Managers, and Operational Leaders, helping them integrate health, safety, and environmental excellence into day-to-day operations. You will identify emerging risks, support critical operational decision-making, and develop practical solutions that enable both safe and successful project delivery. Working alongside our regional operations teams and corporate HSE group, you'll provide practical guidance, coaching, and actionable insights that support safe project delivery while continually improving our HSE Management System (HSEMS).

This role is designated as a safety sensitive position.
Location: The successful candidate is located anywhere in Alberta or British Columbia, within daily commuting distance or is willing to relocate to Kamloops, Prince George, Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton, Terrace, or Fort. St. John.
Travel:
You will be working from a McElhanney office predominantly; however, you will be required to travel to conduct periodic office and project site visits throughout the NIBC region as required. Our projects are widely dispersed across the region, often not in close reach, and our field work duration varies significantly from project to project. Monthly travel requirements vary based on the types and availability of projects but typically range from 0-25%.
What You’ll Do:
Build trusted relationships with operational leaders, coach teams, and support the effective implementation of McElhanney’s HSEMS across operations. Work directly with a team of HSE professionals and operations to deliver on our commitment to provide and maintain a workplace where everyone goes home safely, every day. Support McElhanney’s HSE Systems by contributing to key internal projects and completing work tasks related to the continuous improvement of our HSEMS. Develop Safe Work Methods in collaboration with subject matter experts and support the continual improvement of all elements within McElhanney’s HSEMS. Develop training and education content for employees. Provide support, coaching, and feedback to supervisors in the investigation of incidents, determining root causes, and the recommendation of corrective actions. Proactively identify non-compliance issues and general opportunities for improvement. Assist in the development of solutions to improve safety performance. Provide insights from direct experience, data (e.g., dashboards and processes outcomes), and the frontline to management for decision making, learning, coaching, and continual improvement. Complete McElhanney’s Subcontractor HSE Prequalification Process as required for projects and support the development of Project Specific Safety Plans. Perform internal audits and provide recommendations and corrective actions to management. Conduct periodic worksite inspections at our offices and field project worksites to help verify the effective implementation of McElhanney’s HSE Management System (HSEMS) and provide continuous improvement opportunities for workers and the division/branch. Other tasks as assigned.
What You’ll Bring:
You must have:
Minimum 6 to 10 years of experience in an OHS role preferably supporting field operations in high-risk industries. Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation, hazard identification, risk management, and industry best practices. Experience supporting both field personnel and office-based project managers and operational leaders Excellent communication, relationship-building, coaching, and influencing skills. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and technical writing ability. Attention to detail, and an ability to work well in a team environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and mobile technology. The ability to work independently while building strong partnerships across geographically dispersed teams. A collaborative mindset with the confidence to lead through change and ambiguity.
Nice to have:
Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety CRSP or CRST designation or actively working toward certification. Familiarity with Human and Organizational Performance (HOP), Serious Injury & Fatality (SIF) prevention, Energy-Based Safety, or other contemporary safety methodologies. Experience in the following is a strong asset: Civil construction, pipeline construction, transportation infrastructure, engineering consulting, industrial, oil & gas or other high-risk operational environments. Remote worksites, challenging environments, technical terrain and geographically dispersed operations. A widely dispersed workforce of small crews or individuals. A multi-disciplinary business supporting a combination of office and field work. Experience developing and implementing HSE programs, standards, and practices.
What We Offer:
The salary range for this position is $85,000 - $100,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
