About the Role
Reporting to the HR Manager, the HR Generalist / Benefits Specialist will support both Canadian and U.S. operations across a broad range of Human Resources functions, with a primary focus on benefits administration, employee relations, labour relations, and HR compliance.
This is a full-time position based out of our Corporate Office in Aurora, Ontario.

Compensation
- $90,000 - $100,000 per year, based on experience.

- Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM (hours may vary based on business needs).
Key Responsibilities:
Benefits Administration
- Administer employee benefit programs for Canadian and U.S. employees, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, retirement, and wellness programs.
- Manage employee benefit enrollments, terminations, qualifying life events, beneficiary changes, dependent verification, annual open enrollment, and employee inquiries.
- Coordinate annual benefit renewals, plan implementations, and ongoing plan administration.
- Administer retirement savings programs, including Canadian RRSPs and U.S. 401(k) plans.
- Reconcile carrier invoices, perform monthly eligibility audits, and ensure accurate benefit deductions and employee records.
- Serve as the primary liaison with insurance carriers, brokers, third-party administrators (TPAs), retirement plan providers, and benefit vendors to resolve issues and support plan administration.
Disability & Leave Administration
- Coordinate disability and leave programs for Canadian and U.S. employees, ensuring compliance with all applicable legislation and company policies.
- Administer:
- Canada: Short-Term Disability (STD), Long-Term Disability (LTD), WSIB claims, provincial statutory leaves, and return-to-work programs.
- United States: FMLA, ADA interactive process, Workers' Compensation, Short- and Long-Term Disability, applicable state leave programs, and return-to-work coordination.
- Partner with employees, managers, healthcare providers, insurers, and external partners to facilitate successful return-to-work plans and accommodation processes.
Employee & Labour Relations
- Conduct workplace investigations involving employee complaints, policy violations, attendance concerns, workplace incidents, harassment, and other employee relations matters while maintaining confidentiality and procedural fairness.
- Gather, analyze, and document investigation findings and prepare detailed investigation reports.
- Support labour relations activities, including grievance administration, labour-management meetings, meeting preparation, disciplinary documentation, and interpretation and application of Collective Bargaining Agreement provisions.
- Prepare employment letters, disciplinary documentation, grievance responses, HR correspondence, and other employee-related documentation.
- Provide guidance to managers on employee relations, attendance management, performance management, policy interpretation, conflict resolution, and progressive discipline.
HR Administration & Compliance
- Maintain accurate employee records, benefits data, attendance records, labour relations documentation, and HRIS information within ADP.
- Audit employee files, benefits records, HR documentation, and departmental trackers to ensure accuracy and legislative compliance.
- Support payroll by ensuring employee changes affecting payroll and benefits are processed accurately and on time.
- Ensure compliance with Canadian and U.S. employment legislation, privacy legislation, collective agreements, and company policies.
- Assist with HR reporting, compliance initiatives, recruitment activities, benefits renewals, audits, and departmental projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum five (5) years of progressive Human Resources experience, preferably within a unionized manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Demonstrated experience administering Canadian and U.S. employee benefit programs, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, retirement, and wellness plans.
- Experience supporting Benefits in both Canadian and U.S. jurisdictions, including multiple provinces and states, is strongly preferred.
- Experience managing employee enrollments, qualifying life events, annual open enrollment, dependent verification, beneficiary changes, and benefits administration.
- Working knowledge of Canadian group benefits and U.S. employer-sponsored health plans.
- Experience administering Canadian RRSP programs and U.S. 401(k) retirement plans.
- Experience coordinating annual benefit renewals, plan implementations, carrier invoice reconciliations, and eligibility audits.
- Experience working directly with insurance carriers, brokers, third-party administrators (TPAs), and retirement plan providers.
- Demonstrated experience administering disability and leave programs in both Canada and the United States, including STD, LTD, WSIB, FMLA, ADA, Workers' Compensation, statutory leaves, state leave programs, and return-to-work coordination.
- Strong employee and labour relations experience, including workplace investigations, grievance administration, collective agreement interpretation, seniority administration, and progressive discipline.
- Working knowledge of Canadian employment legislation and U.S. federal and state employment laws relating to HR, benefits administration, disability management, and employee relations.
- Experience using ADP Workforce Now or a comparable HRIS/payroll system.
- Strong knowledge of HR compliance, employment legislation, and HR best practices.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
- Excellent written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.
- Post-secondary education in Human Resources, Labour Relations, Business Administration, or a related field.
- CHRP or CHRL designation (or actively working toward designation) is considered an asset.
