About the role

Join our IT team at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo and bring your technical knowledge to support conservation efforts at one of Calgary’s most unique sites! The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is seeking a permanent full-time Senior Enterprise Architect, IT who will bring blend technical strategy with direct oversight of a small, high impact team.

The Senior Enterprise Architect, IT position reports to the Director, IT and is the most senior technical position in the IT department at Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo. It is a highly technical role with broad and deep accountability for all technology operations, implementations, and planning at the organization.

What you will do:

  • Accountable for investigating, developing, and implementing the IT technology roadmap at Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo, taking into consideration cost-effectiveness (short and long-term), reliability/availability, the business needs and responsiveness, and operational sustainability and risks
  • The IT roadmap/footprint at WICZ includes (but is not limited to) the following technologies:
    • Servers and Storage including standalone servers/storage, hyper-converged infrastructure, data centre operations, cloud storage/backup, remote access, etc.
    • Network including firewalls, core/distribution switches, wireless access points, on-park fibre/copper, network design, and remote site connectivity
    • Cybersecurity including overall cybersecurity posture, SECaaS, network intrusion/monitoring and segmentation, security alerting/response, antivirus, data security/privacy, authentication, framework implementation and compliance (PCI, NIST), etc.
    • Enterprise Applications/Data including application security and inventory, business application support including implementation and operations, data integrations/reporting, data warehousing, data classification
  • Document Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo’s IT technology roadmap and current footprint, as well as developing (and obtaining approval for) business/budget cases for all significant IT technology investments
  • Lead all significant technology infrastructure implementation projects to a successful outcome
  • Accountable for 24*365 WICZ infrastructure operations, including monitoring and troubleshooting of all operational and cybersecurity issues.
  • Provide Tier 3 operational support as leading IT subject matter expert for WICZ.
  • Supervise and mentor a small team, providing technical guidance, performance feedback, and support for professional development.

What you will bring:

  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent is required; a master’s degree in a related area is an asset
  • At least 15 years of progressive experience in IT, up to and including senior level experience, demonstrating deep and broad knowledge across all IT technology domains including servers/storage, network, cybersecurity, IT services, and enterprise applications & data
  • Experience in Strategy Development and Road mapping
  • IT Project/Portfolio Management experience
  • Experience overseeing IT Operations and Service Management (e.g. ITIL)
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience with IT Cybersecurity
  • A familiarity with IT systems within the Retail, Non-Profit/Public, or Entertainment sectors is preferred
  • Certification & Licenses in the following areas would be an asset:
    • Network certifications (e.g. NSE, CCNP, etc.)
    • Server/Database Admin certifications (e.g. NCP, MS SQL, etc.)
    • Cybersecurity certifications (e.g. CISSP, CCSP, etc.)
    • ITIL (V3/V4)
    • Microsoft certifications (e.g. M365, Azure, etc.)
    • Project Management Institute (e.g. PMP, CAPM, etc.)
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) which is demonstrated by expertise in communicating/presenting highly technical concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as demonstrated through active listening, relationship building, and team participation/leading.
  • Ability to facilitate and chair meetings for interdepartmental audiences
  • People leadership skills as demonstrated by experience in leadership or understanding of people-first leadership practices
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • A dedication to achieving commitments and ensuring high quality outputs along with a commitment to finding and implementing best solution

Working Conditions:

  • Sitting at a desk, using a personal computer for long periods of time
  • Must be willing to work a variety of hours and be on-call including weekends and evenings
  • Lifting and moving boxes with computing equipment such as servers, computers, screens etc.
  • High degree of mobility is required

The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is an outdoor facility and all staff working at the zoo must be comfortable working in a large variety of outdoor conditions. The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo follows the advice of Environment Canada when responding to temperature and air quality issues.
