##Responsibilities
The Research Scientist will provide guidance and consultation related to a variety of research functions in the area of X-ray crystallography within the Department of Chemistry, the University and the broader community. The role will facilitate research by providing technical guidance and expertise on single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction research and experimental design and on state-of-the-art X-ray diffractometers, as well as best approaches for project development, implementation, and evaluation. The Research Scientist will oversee research operations within the X-ray Facility, including installation and maintenance of X-ray diffractometers, and providing support for the teaching, research and service missions of the Department, fostering research collaborations, and providing training and guidance to undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, postdoctoral fellows, research associates, faculty, and external users to solve research problems or issues that arise. The role will develop new research initiatives and assist in the completion of grant applications as required. The Research Scientist will also analyze research results, present findings, support and participate in original research publications, and develop new and innovative research approaches to achieve desired research outcomes.
##Qualifications
Education:
-
Completion of, or working towards, PhD in Chemistry or Physics
-
PhD in X-ray Crystallography
Experience:
- 5 years of hands-on experience in single crystal X-ray crystallography in a related academic research environment
Preferred:
-
Experience with powder X-ray diffraction
-
Substantial work completed on postdoctoral research portfolio in a directly related field with a strong publication record
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Demonstrated expertise of scientific/research principles in their area of specialty including X-ray theory (single crystal and powder)
- Knowledge of X-ray instrumentation, basic X-ray experimental set-up and associated software packages
- Familiarity with regulations and guidelines governing research in an academic environment
- In-depth knowledge of best practices for reviewing and writing grant proposals
- In-depth knowledge of methods for research design, implementation, and analysis
- Ability to collaborate across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one's own unit
- Well-developed public speaking skills to engage individuals and audiences inside and outside the University
- Communication skills to convey information in a credible way to garner support
- Ability to work in a manner that models best practices in confidentiality standards
- Ability to provide solutions and ideas for improvement by using imaginative approaches where constructive thinking and innovation are required
- Attention to detail with an ability to retrieve, analyze and synthesize sizable amounts of data, while ensuring that information is accurate and comprehensive
- Advanced skills in software and applications used to produce and analyze research outcomes including Linux/Unix computer operating systems and knowledge of X-ray, word processing, spreadsheet and web design software
- A desire to grow and advance skills, which is demonstrated by attending conferences, workshops and other professional developmental opportunities to enhance performance
- Ability to remain highly motivated, resilient, innovative, and collaborative when faced with challenges
- Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the department’s events and activities
- Ability to provide guidance to assist others in solving complex problems
- Possess a reputation for resourcefulness with a strong sense of accountability and initiative
- Ability to interpret and identify key results or patterns in complex research data, and succinctly summarize findings
- Ability to coach employees and support them to be self-directed and responsible for their own development and learning
- Ability to evaluate issues, recognize potential problems and take action to proactively resolve issues
- Ability to adhere to legislated safety requirements and Western safety policies
