About the role
Summary:
The Material Handler is responsible for coordinating the movement of raw materials and finished goods to ensure efficient operations across the facility. This includes managing inventory accuracy through cycle counts, ERP tracking, and proper documentation, while also overseeing shipping and receiving activities such as preparing and verifying shipments, loading/unloading trucks, maintaining records, rejecting or resolving damaged goods, and routing materials to the correct departments.
Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Unload incoming material shipments (steel pipe, steel wire, etc.) and store efficiently in designated locations.
- Perform receiving inspections on materials to identify defects or damage.
- Verify accuracy of received products so they are available for order fulfillment as quickly as possible.
- Route and organize stock in the yard, ensuring space is used effectively.
- Perform regular physical inventory counts, monthly cycle counts, and yearly inventory counts.
- Update records to reflect inventory changes and maintain accurate documentation.
- Maintain inventory lists, correcting as needed.
- Restock materials as required to support production and operations.
- Arrange and prepare outgoing shipments according to order documentation, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Responding to any shipping discrepancies in a timely manner based on service level commitments
- Participate in training and safety meetings as required
- Other duties as required
Skills/Knowledge

- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
- Mechanically inclined
- Ability to read and understand manufacturing drawings and job order documentation
- Able to follow and understand both oral and written instructions in English
- Dedicated to continuous improvement
Education/Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Post-secondary education in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field is considered an asset.
- 3+ years of experience in shipping and receiving
- Additional training or experience in inventory control, warehouse operations, or ERP systems is preferred.
- Forklift Operator Certification; experience handling oversized loads and industrial materials preferred
Requirements
- Driven, reliable, and a strong sense of initiative to deliver results
- Strong physical fitness and ability to stand and walk for extended periods to meet the demands of a hands-on work environment
- Lift and carry materials weighing up to 45 lbs, lift items weighing more than 45 lbs with assistance from other workers, forklift and/or overhead hoist
- Comfortable working pipe handling/oversized materials in tight spaces and outdoor environments
- Ability to work with others in a fast paced environment to achieve job goals
- Work under pressure while maintaining precision and accuracy
- Basic computer skills (MS office including Excel and Outlook)
- Experience with ERP (Business Central) is considered an asset, but not required.
- Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Willingness and ability to travel to within AB as required.
