You will be working in the Technical Department on the R&D Team in support of the Engineering and Development teams in the prototyping, setup, testing, and validation of new and modified HVAC products. This hands-on role also includes ownership of day-to-day lab operations, ensuring an efficient, safe, and well-maintained working environment for prototype builds and testing activities. This position is ideal for someone who is mechanically skilled, detail-oriented, and thrives in a technical, hands-on role with strong ownership and collaboration with key stakeholders.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Prototype & Test Execution
- Assemble prototype air handling units, subsystems, or mock-ups using engineering drawings, CAD models, and instructions.
- Support execution of design verification, functional, safety and performance tests in collaboration with engineering staff.
- Install and maintain instrumentation including sensors, thermocouples, pressure gauges, and flow meters.
- Calibrate and operate test equipment and data acquisition systems.
- Assist in evaluating and troubleshooting mechanical, systems, electrical, and control issues during testing.
Lab Management & Support
- Oversee day-to-day lab operations, including workspace organization, tool management, equipment calibration, and material staging.
- Maintain lab cleanliness, order, and adherence to safety procedures and best practices.
- Track and manage inventory of test equipment, instrumentation, consumables, and prototype components.
- Maintain, calibrate and record all related Measurement & Test Equipment (MTE) for all department and facility needs.
- Schedule and prioritize lab activities in coordination with the project management and development team to support active projects.
- Identify and communicate maintenance needs, safety concerns, or process improvement opportunities within the lab.
- Ensure proper documentation of lab activities, including test setup notes, schedules, daily logs, and maintenance records.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with mechanical, systems, electrical, and controls engineers to support test plans and iterate on prototype designs.
- Document and report test results, anomalies, and observations in a clear and organized manner.
- Provide technical feedback to the engineering team based on hands-on experience during assembly and testing.
- Other activities as directed by the R&D Manager
Skills, Education, and/or Experience
The following are education and experience criteria used to evaluate the suitability of the Lab Technician Profile or candidates for the position:
- Diploma, certificate, or degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, HVAC Technology or Trades, or related field.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in a lab, prototype, or test environment; HVAC experience is required.
- Proven mechanical aptitude and strong troubleshooting skills.
- Working knowledge of HVAC fundamentals and components (fans, compressors, coils, dampers, controls, etc.).
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
- Familiarity with sensors, instrumentation, test stands, and DAQ systems.
- Comfortable using basic hand and power tools, HVAC equipment (gauges, pumps, recovery, ect), measurement equipment, and fabrication methods.
- Familiarity with current product and industry regulatory, safety and performance standards
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities within a lab setting.
- Basic computer skills for documentation and communication.
- Flexible and adaptable to learning, understanding, and applying new technologies
