A Day in the Life of an Estimator at RWC!
Be part of designing your community. From the downtown core to Northern British Columbia, you’ll lead the estimating process for landmark projects including the new St. Paul’s Hospital, Amazon HQ, YVR Airport, the University of British Columbia, Parq Casino, Sony Imaging and more, working directly with general contractors, suppliers, and our internal team to drive bids from concept to handoff. Primary Responsibilities
- Review tender documents, drawings, specifications, and scope of work to prepare accurate cost estimates and budgets.
- Perform detailed material and quantity take-offs, analyze labour and material requirements, and assemble full project quotations.
- Manage the full estimating and pre-construction process, including subcontractor and supplier solicitation, scope review, pricing confirmation, and subcontract buyout/contracting.
- Set up and maintain On-Screen Takeoff (WinBid) files and organize pricing revisions throughout the tender stage up to project handover to the operations team
- Liaise directly with General Contractors and clients to address RFIs, change orders, and scope clarifications throughout the tender process
- Prepare estimate summary sheets, tender documentation, and proposal reviews for internal approval with management.
- Attend site visits to gather material requirements, assess site conditions, and ensure estimate accuracy.
- Collaborate closely with the project management team during tender and handover to align budgets, access requirements, labour assumptions, and scope expectations.
- Coordinate and drive all required revisions and documentation updates through tender, IFT, and IFC stages to ensure accurate final contract-ready deliverables.
- Apply cost estimation techniques including value engineering and market benchmarking while maintaining strong relationships with suppliers and subcontractors.
- Maintain and update supplier/subcontractor directory, unit pricing, and labour rates in coordination with accounting and finance.
- Participate in initial handoff meetings, production meetings, and post-mortem project reviews to identify improvements for future estimating accuracy and profitability.
- Provide weekly reporting, prioritize time and tasks effectively, and maintain a high level of customer service and responsiveness with General Contractors and clients throughout the project cycle.
- Post-secondary education, diploma or certificate in construction or a related field
- Proficient English language and communication skills
- Proficient in MS Office products
- Resourceful, organized with an engineering aptitude
- Building technology, computerized quality takeoff experience is desirable
- Prior work experience in the construction industry is considered an asset
