JOB SUMMARY UNDER THE GENERAL SUPERVISION OF THE PROGRAM DEAN AND THE DIRECT SUPERVISION OF THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE PHARMACY TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM, THE TECHNICIAN MANAGES AND PARTICIPATES IN THE ASSEMBLY AND CONTROL OF MATERIAL, AND ASSISTS IN THE PREPARATION AND PRESENTATION IN THE LABORATORY AND CLASSROOMS AS REQUIRED BY THE TEACHERS OF THE PHARMACY TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure and provide technical support for Pharmacy courses as assigned per semester in collaboration with department faculty and chairperson

  • Control and maintain inventory, and be responsible for lab supplies being available when needed (includes the ordering of needed supplies)

  • Operate, maintain and ensure correct use of lab instruments and equipment (e.g. calibration)

  • Clean and maintain lab equipment in working order – arrange for repairs or replacements as needed

  • Provide input to chair to support departmental budget planning

  • Contact salespeople, repair companies, and others as needed to manage equipment needs

  • Assist, or supervise students using lab facilities and equipment

  • Maintain a library of reference books, journals, and articles in the lab and virtually, accessible for use by the faculty and students

  • Assist department in lab planning, lab scheduling and related preparation and development of facilities

  • Assist in training laboratory personnel

  • Prepare, set up, and reorganize equipment and supplies for each scheduled lab

  • Keep the laboratories and pre-room areas clean and in good order

  • Ensure the availability of technical personnel during times of laboratory operation

  • Troubleshoot lab equipment

  • Troubleshoot lab activities

  • Maintain safety equipment and post safety signs

  • Keep up to date with developments in techniques and procedures in medication preparation and update practical knowledge of techniques when necessary

  • Arrange for waste disposal

  • Collaborate with other departments for shared spaces and equipment.

  • Provide assistance during Open House and other related activities

  • Perform any other related tasks as may be assigned

EDUCATION:

  • To have a diploma of college studies (DEC) in an appropriate specialty or an attestation of studies which is recognized as equivalent by the competent authority.
  • To have training as an Assistant Technician in Pharmacy. A DEP in Pharmacy Technical Assistance (Assistance Technique en Pharmacie) would be an asset.

Specific Requirements:

  • Experience in both the community and hospital setting as a Pharmacy Technical Assistant, an asset
  • Strong knowledge of medication preparation techniques. Both sterile and non-sterile medication preparation experience would be an asset.
  • To obtain and maintain WHMIS and First Aid Training Certifications
  • Knowledge of the use and maintenance of equipment used in the pharmacy
  • Knowledge of the pharmacy environment - i.e. both hospital and community settings
  • Autonomous – able to work with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of industry related software
  • Knowledge of medical and related terminology
  • Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology and of common health issues and diseases.
  • Creativity and flexibility in designing innovative approaches to solving problems.
  • Practical knowledge of current procedures and equipment in pharmacy environments.
  • Able to work collaboratively as a team member
  • Advanced English (advanced oral, written comprehension and written production)
  • Basic French (basic oral, written comprehension and written production)
