Location:

This position is eligible for a hybrid work model. The hybrid work model contemplates a flexible work arrangement including working remotely with occasional attendances on-site to a combination of remote and in-office work arrangement. When attending an event or meeting in person, your primary office location will be based out of Sims Square, 390 Brant Street, Burlington. Effective January 2026 this role will be required to be on site 50% of the time each month. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands.

Position Overview:

City of Burlington is seeking a lawyer to join its municipal group to provide comprehensive legal advice and a wide range of legal services with a primary focus on matters relating to municipal and privacy law. The successful candidate will work primarily with the Building Services Division, the By-law Compliance Division, and the Office of the City Clerk.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Deputy City Solicitor – General Litigation, Risk Management & Municipal Law section, the successful candidate will:

  • Provide legal representation and strategic advice to City Council, senior leadership and City staff on a variety of legal matters with a primary focus in the areas of municipal and privacy law. Primary client groups include the Building Services and By-law Compliance Divisions and the Office of the City Clerk.
  • Research, negotiate, draft, and advise on a variety of legal documents including by-laws, resolutions, policies, reports, legal opinions and agreements.
  • Provide enforcement advice both within the provincial offences and administrative penalty streams, as applicable.
  • Provide legal advice and opinions to City clerk on matters subject to the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
  • Participate on inter-departmental and corporate teams reviewing issues of legal and corporate interest.
  • Work with staff to ensure that the City’s legal risks are minimized.

Requirements:

  • Post Graduate degree in law (LLB or JD) and member in good standing with LSO.
  • Minimum 3 years of progressive experience in with focus on municipal law being an asset.
  • Occasional non-office site visits required. Attendance at evening meetings may be required.
