Position Summary Recreational Therapist, Adult Mental Health Inpatient Psychiatry Your goals in this position include but are not limited to fostering hope and optimism in patients, nurturing positivity in emotion and outlook in patients, promoting social interaction among patients to improve quality of life, increasing activity tolerance, cognitive stimulation, providing opportunities to learn new skills and maintain current level of functioning. You’re a great relationship builder, and foster close contacts with peers across the entire organization. You have great interpersonal skills, and effortlessly connect with physicians, staff, patients, and families. This position supports the hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and families.
On a practical level, you will
- Create a framework for each program addressing the needs, strengths and interests of patients within the context of their environment, where the group program outlines should include purpose, rationale, description, goals and outcomes, evaluation mechanisms and resource requirements
- Utilize an individualized and systematic assessment process to determine individual strengths, needs and interest of patients to establish the priorities of therapeutic recreation intervention
- Outline specific strategies and modalities based on assessment results
- Participate with Program Clinical Teams by attending patient rounds
- Assist with crisis intervention and prevention and work with all staff to uphold hospital and unit policies in order to maintain a stable inpatient environment
- Supervise Recreation Therapy Students and Volunteers (University)
- Provide appropriate educational programs to hospital staff and the community as needed
Qualifications
- Completion of a University Degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies (Therapeutic Recreation Specialization) or a University Degree with a post-graduate diploma in Therapeutic Recreation
- Membership in Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO)
- Minimum 2 years working experience as a Recreational Therapist
- Experience working with people who have mental illness
- Experience related to the implementation of individual and group intervention plans, including intervention techniques and methods of behavioural change
- A basic command of medical and mental health terminology
