About the role
Job Description:
Postdoctoral fellowship
Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases
University of Manitoba
The McKinnon lab at the University of Manitoba Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and the Arsenio lab in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Immunology are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to co-supervise to carry out research projects in HIV mucosal immunology.
Responsibilities:
The focus of the McKinnon lab is to understand how mucosal factors, particularly in the gut and vagina, contribute to the risk of HIV acquisition and the early events of HIV infection. Specific projects focus on the causes and impact of inflammation, characterization of HIV target cells, and how these relate to epidemiological factors in high-risk men and women. The lab is carrying out collaborative projects in Canada and internationally in several African and Asian contexts.
The Arsenio lab aims to understand the molecular processes of T cell differentiation during viral infection and chronic inflammatory diseases. Research projects in the lab involve the application of single-cell genomics, transcriptomics and spatial transcriptomic approaches to better understand T cell-mediated immunity.
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading at least one major project in the McKinnon/Arsenio labs, and assisting with aspects of ongoing projects led by laboratory members. Candidates will have opportunities for student mentorship, teaching and will participate in preparation of research results for publication and funding proposals. Qualifications:
Candidates should hold a Ph.D. or equivalent in the biological sciences with a strong track record of productive research. Experience in immunology and/or systems biology research is highly desirable. Experience in tissue imaging, single cell biology, multicolour flow cytometry, cell sorting, gene expression (e.g. RNA-seq) and/or multiplex cytokine assays will be considered an asset. Experience in biostatistics including epidemiological studies in humans is preferred.
Additional Information:
The postdoctoral position will be held at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada, with a possibility of field work where our projects are based. The minimum starting salary is $40,000 plus benefits. Funding for travel to conferences and field work related to this position is also available. The appointment will be for two years starting immediately, with a possibility of extension.
